Jirfe coDtmnnity was startled, last Wednesday by a report that Capf. Lv IS. McKinney, county trensurer, was short in his ?ioeount with the county. Kurnor put the amount at all the way

from nine to sixteen thousand dollars. It has been very hard to lenrn anything definate about the matter, owing to the reticence of tho?ewho should be able to give the information. Frm sources we deem the most reii-ab-Kr, we have obtained the following particulars: When Capt. McKinney went info office four years ago he was heavily in debt. His creditors pressed him so had that he paid oif the claims, and in order to do so, no doubt had to draw considerably ahea'd of what was due him from the county. Then his private ventures did not turn out as successful as'espscted on account of loss of crops, the death of a number of sheep,, etc. This left him in a 'bad shape at the end of his first term of office, and in hopes that he might straighten matters up during a second ter,n, he expended a considerable sum probably as muplv as $2,000 to be re-

efctted: But while it i.s claimed

that lie succeed during his present term of considerably reducing tlie amount of shortage, he was unable to make good the entire deficiency. It wis rumored last fall that Capt. McKinrisy

twas short in his accounts, but it

could be traced to no reliable source, and the matter passed off as having originated for politicial capital. Capt. McKinney feels deeply the consequences which must follow his noRure, and we have no desii-e to open the wounds widei 03 umgnifying or embellishing the facts. That he did a great wrong m appropriating to his own itso'the funds of the coinrtv, cm not be denied. That ihc earnestly endeavored to right tlie wrong we behrc to be true. In Lifts case, as in all-others of like nature,

gossip is rife with all sorts of rumors

and cou cot u res as fn tlie cause of

jibe -unfortunate condition of a flairs,

but we belive the thle cause to be

about as wo hav& stated. In 1S72, Capt. iVloKihncy, when comparatively a stranger in the county, was elect-

'ed Sheriff by the Republican' party.

He continued in office until 187C,

when he turned over His n Hairs in

in good shape, and wS succeeded by Capt. Mart. Alexander. In 1878 he

was the Republican nominee for

county treasurer, and defeated Geo.

Finley, the Democratic nominee,

by about 25 votes. In -1889410 was

a, candidate for relection. and de

feated S, E. Carmichael bv 123 -otcs.

His term of office lfiJf Expire next September, and at that time intend

ed locating in Texas, where he now owns some bud, and4 to wliich point

he recently sent his wife and family.

The exposure of his shortage might havo been delayed until next September, but it sfceiftshe prefered to make a clear breast of cvetytblng now We learn that he has signified to his bondsmen his willingness to give up all the property he-has, in order that their liabilities may be reduced to the lowest possible amount. His bond-is for $60,000, and is perfectly good. The Commissioners say that the deficiency wiii amount- to ' between ten and twelve thousand dollars, but so&e'of'thc bondsmen say it wi?l be as high as from foffrleea to sixteen thousand dollais. The bondsmen will meet next Monday to consider the matter, and, in the mean time, Nat "frill is in charge of the office in connection with McKinney,

it is claim eu that the-bond lor the'

first two years is fully as responsible as the bond for the-present term. Some of! the bondsmen claim that the shortage at the end of the first two years was over $16,001).
