found a large number of indictments for niisdemeanors, and a great many of these cases were disposed of tins week by pleas of guilty. A number of plain drunks paid fines ranging from three to five dollars. There promises to be a lively time in the Second Ward at the election next Tuesday. Capt iShoemaker will be an independent candidate for Council for the long term against Wilson Adams, and George Walker, colored, has been brought out against Ben A. MeGee, for the short term. This is purely a Republican move, and is done to have revenge on MoGee for scratcning a part of the county Republican ticket last fall. At least, that is what his opponents charge. The Courier has always insisted-that the colored man and brother should be given a chance as he holds the balance of power in this city and county, but when Republicans bolt MeGee, the regular nominee, they set a bad example. An all events, it is not our funeral, and the Democrats can only lay back and say, "Go in, boys!" It may turn out like the fable about two oats fighting over a piece of meat, and the dog came and carried it off.

There have been several robberies at Bedford recently, and it is suspicloned that Thompson had a hand in them. The citizens, generally, were very glad on hearing of his arrest, and Roddy and Browning were greeted with numerous offers to set 'em up.

The wood sawing match at 0. R Dowden's, j a Clear Creek township, on Monday of last week, was a success. John Humphrey and Temple Johnson carried off tho prize, being 148 inches ahead at 6 o'clock. There were 416 feet sawed by four man. Mrs. Lucy Johnson and Martha Bender prepared dinner in the woods for 15 men. Humphrey was the only man that refused anything stronger than sweet milk. The rest took coffee. The sawyers were visited during their ten hours of work by Nath-

James Harbinson, and others. A shephard dog, belonging to C. P. Dowden' and valued at 25, was killed by the falling of a tree. Another sawing is talked ol to take place at A.
