SixPeetofEath! THE LAST EARTHLY POSSESSION OF GARFIELD.

Strayed, from the residence of Dr. Campbell, near Union villa, about three weeks ago, a white roan cov, with one hip knocked down. The animal is about 9 years old. Please send any information to Dr. Campbell. . ca ss , Oke of Garfield's physicians was a Bliss-ter that drew all the newspaper reporters. Coxklino declares that he will be engineer of the New York Republican machine or bust it's boiler.

THE FU KERAL AT CLEVELAND The last scene in the sad tragedy is over, and the body of James A. Garfield lies - buried in Lakeview Cemetery, near Cleveland, Ohio. Never before in the histojy of America vere the funeral rites of a citizen attended with snch impressive and solemn ceremonies, and never before did snch avast concourse of the people of this great Republic assemble together to do honor to the dead. It ispresident ArthnrHnow, and the name of Garfield has its place in ;the history of the past. NOTES OF THE FUNERAL, The inneral car carried the Chickamauga battle flags. Mrs. Garfield with her mother, lister and children have returned to their old home at Mentor. General Hancock was present, dressed in full uniform He attracted much attention. The casket was not opened at Cleveland, on account of the unnatural look of the face of the corpse. One hundred and fifty members yof Garfield's old regiment were present and took part in the procession. The funeral services were held in the Park at 10 o'clock -An the morning, and were of about an hour's duration. - All Sunday and Monday nights the stream r of humanity flowed through the Park to view the casket and decorations. The third section of the presidential train from Washing ton, Jast Saturday, ran into a hand car and killed four men;

, The President's brother, Thomas CrarfieM, of Michigan, was present,

as was also Mr. Rudol ph, Mrs Gar

field's father.

Thirty thousand biscuits and four

hundred hams wre consumed :. in

making sandwiches f for the men in the procession; i The colored people were mad be

cause theyswere assigned to no part

in the ceremonies, nor recognized in

: any way. :

The people were allowed to enter the Park, pass through the paviliion,

and look at the casket. On Sunday,

alone, over 100,000 people passed through. t The procession was six miles long . many of the participants marching sixteen abreast. A; number of societies were turned away, as room could not be found for them in the line. All the -railroads ran every available car to Cleveland; A train from Cincinnati consisted of twelve sec tions, with from twelve to fourteen car 8; in a section. The funeral discourse was preaehed by Elder Errett, of the leading Christian Church in Cincinnati. Bishop Bedell, of the Episcopal Church, read the scriptures, and

It is said that coffee will keep a

person awake until late hours of the

night. A large number of the

Bloomington young men must drink

a deal of coffee. In these moments of excitement ii

is wen -enongn to remember tue words of Garfield himself uttered to

an excited body of men after the

death of Lincoln: uGod reigns, and

the Government at Washington still lives."

President; Lincoln was shot on the 14th of April, 1865, and died at

twenty two mm u tea past siven

o'clock on the following morning. At ten o'clock on the morning of the 15th, Andrew Jacksou was sworn in

as President.

President Art hnr. Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States, took the oath of Oifice on Tuesday. He enters upon the duties of his office under circum stances of great embarrassment. His nomination at Chicago was a public surprise. No one had thought of him in connection with the YicePresidency. He was selected to pacify the disappointed supporters of General Grant, who under the lead of Conkling had maintained such a valiant fight for their candidate. His nomination fell like n dead weight on the party everywhere. He was scarcely known, save as a local political manager. As Collector of the

Port he had used the patronage of the

office to strengthen the Republican machine; regard less of p u b 1 i c in terests, or of expense; and President Hayes and Secretary Sherman dis

missed him in consequence with

such public expressions as would suffice to destroy most men. Undoubtedly the Republican ticket owed its success m 1SS0 very largely to Mr. Arthur's exertions. Ho suggested the Borsey raid in Indiana, which was so effective in the distribution of new two-dollar greenbacks and the increase of the Republican vote. And to-day, to the astonishment of everybody and the chargrin of not a few, Chester A. Arthur is President! The possession of great power and authority oftentime develops unsuspected capacities and dignity of character. It is sincerely to be hoped that that Mr. Arthur will fill the great office he holds with-wise, patriotic, public service. It is to be hoped that he will realize the delicacyof his position, and conduct in such a way as to disarm public criticism. He has a magnificent opportunity of serving the nation and making the people forget that he was never a publie favorite.

The Indianapolis Review says that the; highest ground in the State is in Randolph county. Monroe county claims the highest point in the State, and so does-Brown county. Djemooratb and Republicans, alike, have been praying for the President. When Garfield was well the Republicans were preying just as hard. It is gettirifi to be near the time

Bev. R. C. Houghton, of the M. EJrf0r the great Democratic family of Chnrch, offered the prayer. At theV Indiana to think about setti ns their

tomb, Rev. J. H.Jones, Chaplin of Garfield's old regiment delivered a short address. Twelve miles of curbstone, along the line-of march,? were lined with men, women and children, sitting close together, with their feet in the gutters. Behind these the people were crowded in a densely-packed mass. 8,000 soldiers were detailed to keep these people in order. Mrs. Garfield, as well as the President's mother stood the ordeal-brave-ly. She first gazed sadly out of the caoriage window part of the time, with veil swept aside only once. Her features showed signs of emotion too

great to control, but by an effort she

gained her composure and then sank back into the -carriage.. The Governors of the following States were present : Porter of Indiana, Foster of Ohio, Roberts, of Yermont,Hawkins of Tennesse, Bigeicw of Conncticut, Jerome of -Michigan, Smith of Wisconsin, Gear of Iowa, Ludlow of New Jersey, Jarvis of North: Carolina, Jack son of West Virginia, if oyt of Pennsylvania, Cornell of New York, Pitkin of Colorado. Br proclamation of President Arthur, the Senate is called to meet on

the 10th of October. At that time a

President of the Senate will be elect
