'i here is hardly a psperin the land but has something to say upon the subject of to' pistols, and almost weekly, if not daihv accounts of accidents are recorded, owing to their uareless use by small child reo. The people cannot smake the excuse ol ignorance m this matter, but still .at hers and mothers bujT them and place them in the hands of their children. No less than twenty-live accidents have occu red from the use
ol toy pistols within the past week.
The toy pistol would furnish as good a subject for the anathemas of llu prohibitionist as the liquor trafic. This surprising invitation is ex tended by a Portland correspondent of the Boston Traveller ; u( ome hither ail ye that thirst- for wine, beer,
'spirits or liquors of any sort, and
verily your thirst shall be quenched. Here in the home of prohibition, where the Maine liquor law originated, can be had liquors of all kinds, and in any quantity !" It would be idle to .say anything in this connection about a clap of thunder in a clear sky. '1 he impression has pie vailed that to 'pit ?a drink of any thing stronger than cider in Maine is a task as difficult as to find a needle in a toracre stubble field. But we are told by this correspondence, tart her on m his letter, that there are in the limits ot the city of Portland over 200 places where . liquor can be bought. The clubs have it, the hotels keep it, the drug stores sell it, the lunch dispense it and the grog shops retatlf largo quantities of it. So hold have the sellers become that it is even kept on draught. A year tgo it was almost impossible to obtain a glass of beer. How did this change come about? "Billy, (He Kid'" Within a few days, too, the career of a youthful bighwaj-man, who must take rank?witk the most famous outlaws of the past, has been cut short by the bullet of anSheriff. Not even romance has conceived a more desperate characte r, ab Icbdi er -an d m ore dishing robber, than-Billy the Kid. He seems to hf.ve emulated the wild and murderous deeds ot which he hzd read in the most lurid fiction de

Men have various ambitions, and the boy who was known as Billy the Kid evidently aspired to a place among the? most tern ble of d esperadoes. Hisanity was to make him self famous as an outlaw and to become conspicuous as abold rider, an unerring. sho9 and a remorseless murderer; wuip took the lives of men with entire u nconcern whenever they

his lawless; Hinder takings or pro Yoked his wrath or his ma' ice. Billy the Kid was the chief of one of
;thetmost dre&ded of piratical bands;
probably, indeed, the most successful and the most terrible of them all. His real name is not known, though that he was e f Irish descent there is no doubt. It seems that he began his lawless career by killing a man at the age of sixteen, and and soon after wen into robbery and murder as a business, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado being the scene of the exploits in which he toolc so great pride. The notal of his murders is put as high a3 high as thirty-three or; thirty-four, and there may have been some ot " wliich we have no ac count. Yet when he was shot he had barely, reached his majority, and therefore had been pursuing the life

M. i'his new line is to be known as the 4,Albkut Lea Route, 1 and pusses through the very best sections of the States of Ulnois, Iowa and Minnesota, affording travelers a view of the great harvest fields of our country, and a section peopled by the most progressive and prosperous of of our Northwestern inhabitants. We understand that round trip excursion tickets to point? in the great wheat region of the Red River of the North, and Missouri River Valley, will be immediately put on sale, good for 40 da3's from date of issue. This will enable Eastern farmers to visit the greatest M'heat country on the globev and see harvesting done on the most gigantic scale. Surely, no one that desires to see the West, will forego this opportunity to do so, by ticketing over any other than the "Albert Lea Rontej via West Liberty. It produces the etfects of the hot, tropical summer in the soul, therefore, it was injurious. The preacher went on to enlarge upon this objection, in the course of his remarks stating that men and women who really en joyed frequent dancing parties did not Teally relish prolonged employment. Their scuJs were without fibre: the women went around in the morning in loose gowns, too limp and flabby to dres3r sipping their tea with small spoons. Then an objection was made to the folly of the dance, because it indisposed the soul for serious thought of any kind, if he (the speaker) was not mistaken, this was a very serious world we lived in. There was a very small chance for nonsense in our brief probation. There were not many places in the souVs probation where jokes naturally came in. Men and women who danced were not the most serious; the amusement was a preventive to seriousness, and this was to be deplored. The more peoplodanced the sillier they became. Work became burdensome and study intolerable. This the speaker argued lengthily, summing aphis remarks upon this objection by saying that dancing despoiled the soul of its seriousness; the whole amusement was unblushing, unworthy, miserable nonsense, destructive to the best interests of the human soul."
