It is as hot as Hell This is a remark that Beecher once made from liis pulpit. r The President's principal pbj-sic-fan no doubt thinks it perfect Bliss to get so m ach free adrertising. If Garfield does not recover it will not be for the lack of all the attention that mortal man can give. This season of the year yon should not sleep on the porch and leave the cellar dopr open. Ton might take a bad cold. The people of Bedford are much rejoiced' over the addition to a saloon in that town of a mammoth beer cooler that will bold sixteen kegs at a time.
A Bedford saloon displays a sign announcing fresh buttermilk for sale by the drink. The thing takes immensely. All the boys rush to the saIoon to get a glass of "bnttermilk." ' The Ohio Democrats have nominated John W. Bookwalter, of Springfield, for Governor. Care should be taken that the name should not be written Backwater, as he, is not that i kind of a max. B. Schweitzek, Representative . from Owen county, the man who managed to get bis name in the Indianapolis papers so frequently last winter, is out as a Democratic candidate for State Treasurer. It is our opinion that when the Convention is over it will be found Schweitzer has been beautifully left by a more worthy and capable competitor. Charles Jules Guitean, the assassin of Garfield, was a Republican campaign orator only last fall, and labor- - ed with zeal to secure Garfield's election. His campaign speeches were issued in documents by the Bepublican National Committee. One of - these speeches has already found its - way into the press. It was delivered August 6th last, in New fork city. It was is in the usual style of fervid - bloody shirt Republican campaign ?' oratory. The closing sentences were - as follows: ; Ye men whose sons perished in the ' war what say you to the issue? Shall our National Treasury be controlled 5 by ex-rebels and their Northern
allies, to the end that millions of
Southern war claims be liquidated?
If you want the Republic bankrupt-'
en with the prospect of another war, make Hancock President. If you want prosperity and peace make Garfield President, and the Republic will develop till it becomes the greatest and i wealthiest nation .on the gloDe.
A Cincinnati astronomer says the comet has two tails, and the Boston Post wonders what liquor produces this particular optical illusion. New Orleans merchants have more faith in an old horseshoe over the door than in a column advertisement in a daily paper. A train with three hundred solders aboard attemptedthe passage of a frail bridge on a road in Mexico, a few days ago. The bridge broke down the train plunged into the horrible chasm. In the freight van was a large consignment of alcohol, which exploded and finished the work of destruction so well begun by the bridge. Over two hundred men were killed outright or roasted to death, while fifty others were more or less injured. . m e ' . . Henry Smith, a colored fiend, ravished a little orphan girl at Des Arc, Arkansas, on Saturday. He then cut her throat, atabbed her in the side and bowels and mashed her shoulder and head with a fence rail. A.t night about thirty or forty of the leading citizens of the town went to the jail, took the fiend out and sent his soul to join that of Geo. Scott, who was linched here last winter. The papers say the hanging was one of the most quiet and orderly that has ever taken place in the State. At the State convention of County Superintendents, held at Indianapolis a few days since, it was thought
best to raise the grade of examina
tion for teachers licenses . As the grade now stands, about all those who have been teaching on six months certificates will be left out unless they can do better in the future. The present grade requires a general average of seventy per cent, to get anything, and those who have been holding a higher grade of licenses will be graded down in proporrtion, for it now requires seventy per cent, for six months eighty for twelve, ninety for eighteen and ninety five for twenty tour. The prohibition question in Kansas is causing considerable excitement there, and is viewed with interest by the people of other States. Some hold that with the exception of a few town, the law is a success. Others say that only in the smallest towns and rural districts can it be made to work effectually. In the larger Icities, the officials are charged with being in league with the rum sellers, and passing by in silence, open violations of the law. The truth probably is, that like all questions, public opinion is the law that decides Kthe matter. The side that gains the choice ot the jury is the one that wins the day. Until the people are elevated up to a standard that favors total-absti nance, there always will be trouble in enforcing prohibitory raeasures. In the meantime, the lawyers are the ones to reap the most benefit
The "truly good Deacon Richard Smith," a well known Cincinnati journalist, in a recent address before the press association of Northern Indiana, related I he following in reference t& the credit system in journalism: "When the Gazette Company changed from the credit to the cash in-advance system there were $86,099 due on the boots from weekly subscribers alone that had been accumulating for a third of a century of that amount not 80,000 cents were collected. We employed a man and furnished him a good horse and sent him off on a collecting tour. In six
months he died, thesadleand bridle were pawned for keep, and the man returned a considerable balance
(against the company. We sold the
books for old paper and called those credits lost
It is proposed to raise $250,000 for Sirs. Garfield, and several prominent New Yorkers have started the subseriptuMv with $5,060 each. Accord uagjo the agreement, the money wil! be invested in U. S. Bonds, of which
Mrs. Garfield; will receive the interest
and, at her death, the amount will be divided anoong her children. This is a nice little return for Mrs. Garfield's devotion to her wounded husband, but the trouble is that every woman in the whole country will be wanting to have her husband Gui-teaued-
. Those of our stay-at-home patriots, who talk so glibly about "rebel Democrats," are directed to the following from the Governor of Kentucky: "I request that all business be suspended, and that the good people of this common-wealth assemble in their churches and other places of worship, and jjnite their prayers, addressee! to the souree of every good and perfect gilt imploring that the great calamity now impending oer our common

A excessively hot wave passed
over the country the latter days of
last-week and the first of the present one. At Pittsburgh, Pa., the thermometer registered 105 in the shade Sunday, and many prostrations oc
curred, twenty-one proving fatal.
Many mills were compelled to shut
down Thursday. At Cincinnati the
mercury reached 103 Sunday, and
prostrations were frequent lhir-
teen deaths resulting from excessive
beat occurred. At Covington, Ky, four fatal sunstrokes resulted. On
Thursday thermometres registered
100 at Danviil. Vs., and 95 at Port Jervis, N. Y. ; on Sunday, 101 at Indianapolis, Ind., with three fatal sunstroke. Telegrams show that the intense heat extended all through the West, and several fatal sunstrokes are reported from other points.
