If these were? war times, the Democrats would be held responsible for the attempt, on the President's life. The two wings of the Republican party can fsettie. the matter among themselves.
It i9 suptiosed by some astronomers that the earth passed through the tail of the great onset of 1861, without observed effect;, except, per liaps a slight phosphorescent mist. Timid people may take courage From the report of the late InterNational Sunday School Convention, held at Toronto -Canada, we learn that there are about 90,000 Sunday Schools in the United i States, with si bout 8,000,000000 teachers and scholars, In the Sunday: Schools of the world there are said to-be 15,000,000 teachers and attendants. t
Washington, July 2. The President was shot at 9:20 while passing troin the ladies reception-room in the Baltimore and Potomac - depot. His part, consisting of most of the cabinet and other families, had preceeded him and were in the train. He drove up to the depot with Blaine, and both entered arm-in-arm. Guiteau, the assasstn, allowed them to pass, and fired two shots; one scraped the arm and the other entered the hack above the region of the kidneys, and passed downward. The President fell, and was at first par
tially paralyzed in the lower limbs.
He soon rallied and dictated a dis
patch to his wife. He was taken to
the director's room and a partial ex
amination made. The case was regarded as critical, and he was carried
out and down rapidly to the White
House. : Probing did not reveal the position of the ball, and as there was
some, internal bleeding there was se
rious apprehension of speedy death.
In hour, however, the President had
rallied and the sign of p&ralj-sis be
gan to pass away. This relieves the anxiety which arose from a fear that
the ball had struck the spine.
The statement that the assassin is
Gniteau, was verrified by an officer
in charge of the jail. The prisoner arrived and was placed in a cell at
.10:30 o'clock, Juse one hour after the
shooting occurred. He gave Lib
name as Charles Guiteau, of Chlca
go, 111. In appearance he is a man
about thirty years of age, and is sup
posed to be of French decent jH'Uh
He
has sandy complexion, is slight,
weight not more thon 125 pounds. He wears a mustache and whiskers,
and his sunken cheeks and ejes, far apart from each other, give a sullen, or, the official described it, a "loony" appearance. The officer in question
gave it as his opinion that Guiteau
is a Chicago communist, and states
that he has noticed it t be a peculiarity of nearly all murderers that
their eyes set far apart, and Guiteau, he said, is no exception to fhe rule. The following letter was taken from the prisoner's pocket at police headquarters: July 2,1881. "To the White House:" "The President's tragic death was a sad necessity, but it will unite the Republican party and save the republic.' Life is a flimsy dream, and it matters little when one goes. A human life is of small value. During the war thousands of brave men

The dispatches throughout the week have been of the Bame tenor, and the latest one, received Thursday evening says, "The President is very cheerful.
