JPatOMt "Home Print." "The Owen County Journal has laid aside its patent, and now prints its paper all at home. A very sensible change th at. Blooin tt eld Democrat.

The Journal is now printed all at home but stereotyped plates of reading matter are used, and where the better comes in we can not see. The

many slurs thrown out by some edi

tors about patent in skies is the worst

kind of prejudice. We know of several papers in tnis part of the State

that crow loudly about being "all

printed at home." Take two "patent-" pages of a newspaper and thev will be found to consist of at least two-thirds reading matter news, stories, and miscellaneous reading. Take two pages of "home print," other thaa those on which the local news, etc.. is printed, and they will be found to consist of about ouelburth re-prtuted reading matter. Now. to claim that "home print" is superior to "patent print" is simply to set up that.four columns of reprinted reading matter, selected by a country editor, from his limited exchange list, is better 'than twelve columns of reading matter prepared by a corps of editors in the city. The only objection we see to 'patents'

is the advertising on them, but that

can be remedied by using sheets

without advertisements, and thus control all of that branch of the business. Is it not reasonable to suppose that subscribers to a country

paper prefer six or eight more co

umns of reading matter through the

medium of a "patent" than that much space filled up with a lot of dead st.Aiwtvned oaten t medicine and

revenge by sending the editor obit nary poetry.. Now is the time for

The Springfield Republican puts it in this way: tIf President Garfieid will send over to the library of Cougress, among whose books he has passed happier hours than he is likely to enjoy as President, and get an Atlantic Monthly of a few years back he can read an article on civil service reform by James A. Garfield, which the past ten weeks of his own administration will make as bitter reading as anything he has ever touched. If Garfield had been told, when he first turned over the leaves of that article, that he would become President, and at the very start give the lie to his professions and put back the reform instead of advancing it, he would have come to his feet with an indignant "Is thy servant a dog that he should do this thing!" But he has done it."

A nolie prosequi was entered 3Tes-

terday in favor of Joseph Uart, Charles A. Brync, Louis F. Post, and Kenward Philp in the Morey-letter case. This is only scant justice. These gentlemen, to secure the ends of political cabal, were most shame fully persecuted, and one of them, Mr. Philp, treated with disgraceful indignity, the imputation being cast upon him that he was a forger. When the trial took place the testimony against him was of the moit trivial character, and even the District Attorn ey was forced to admit that it was entirely irrelevant. Truth published the M rey letter in entirely good faith, and when ii discovered that it had been imposed upon it owned up squarely and manfully. Not only this, but it made every effort possible to discover the forger, far exceeding in zeal the members of the Republican' commit tee to whom the task was assigned. It might, perhaps, have been better had the gentlemen insisted upon a trial, but the nolle prosequi is so worded that it is a complete vindication, and justice, although tardy, has at least ben done. N. Y. Express. The Oil City Derrick thus discourses on suicide: "Murders and suicides are becoming quite popular again, and increase in number as the weather grows warmer. The old style, cut low in the neck, is all the rage, though for novel ly some prefer hanging a la Hainan. The gunpowder taking off is-thought to bo altogether too flashy, except for exceptional cases. The cold water plunge is a fovorite resort for some, but it is old-fashioned. Poison-taking is too extravagant, and not quite taking enough for ladies."

Oil Cloths and Carpet at the

Bee Hive. Children's Stocking. The question of short socks instead of stockings for children is, says a physician, I am glad to see, being noticed; and I trust the result will be that the custom of confining children's limbs in hot, and especially in dark-colored stockings, will, at least in summer, give way before the pretty fashion -now almost universal in Prance, Italy, Belgium and Holland- of keeping boys and girls, especially the latter, in socks. As a medical man, I am convinced that, provided a child is healthy, and otherwise warmly and suitably clad, it is all the better at any time of the year, for having its limbs exposed. In summer there is no doubt about it. There is no finer health-giving agent than fresh, warm air and bright sunshine. Children cannot have too much ot either. Their limbs ought to be bathed in both. Those who see our little people wading on the seashore, delighting to paddle for hours in the waves, their scanty clothing tucked up charmingly, know that children are never so happy as when their arms and legs are bare ahd free.
