Legislature provides for the election, in every township in the State, on the first Monday in April, 1882, and every two years thereafter of a Superintendent of roads within his township, all of which he shall have charge bothVfor construction and re pair. A poll tax of two dollars is to be assessed upon every able-bodied niau between the age of 2i and 50

years and the county commissioners also levy a tax not exceeding twenty-live cents on the $100 on all property in the township subject to State taxation, except that property in incorporated towns which shall be exempt from such tax, IMic township Superintendent shall put all the roads in his territory in as good order as possible during the months :(' April, May and June of each year, and make such ditching, draining and embankmerrts and build such bridges and culverts as shall seem to him prudent and rjost to construct on abroad not less than IS feet in Width and when material is at hand mav etrVer nine feet of the same with gravel or any other hard substance which will make a hard surface, ex pending ail the available means in his handshy the 15th of- November Off each year. He shall also cause all roads to be mowed at least twice a year in August and November, The work? is divided into "extraordinary v which must be done .during the months ot April, May and June, and "ordinary" which must be done between April I and November 15, and when the citizens of? any township contribute work, or mono to make any ditch, drain, embankment, or to gravel any such road, the Superintendent shall contribute an equal amount il he has the moans at hand for th is purpose. shall be a sufficient vouchor. The:

roadmaster is to receive $1 50 per day, of ten hours, and the Superintendent $2 per day. The Superintendent may let-out all work over $25. by contract, with power to reject any or nil bids. Any person who shall injure any dam, drain, embankment, ditch or other construction made for the protection of any

highway or injure ordeface any guide j

post or inscription or hinder passengers by obstruct! ng a n y h igh way or bridge or who shall fail to keep to the right hand when meeting another vehicle, shall be subject to a fine of $5, and it is made the duty of the township Superintendent to prosecute the same when information is conveyed to him. 5 The Superintendent is authorized to enter upon any land adjoining the highway and take any necessary material for the construe tion of said highway, for which any person aggreived his action against the township, the methods for the determination of which are fully set out. It is made the duty of the owner of an v land through which

any highway runs to remove all obstructions as si on as knowledge of the same comes to Inm, for which he shall be entitled to resonable compensation. The office of supervisor of roads is abolished, and his duties are made incumbent on the township Superintendent. Persons are permitted to ivoiik out their poll-tax under direction of the Superintendent. ;

The denomination controls 17,562 churches, valued at $G-lJ131,306, an average value of $3,651. The in crease in churches during the year was 647, over three every two days. The increase in the value of the churches was $1,610,889. about $44, 130 a da'. There are 5,8-11 parsonages or pastor's houses an increase of 155 valued at $8,750,513. The present indebtedness on church property is reported at $355,432; ti e

amount paid on church debts, $717,404, and the amount raised ior church birldmg and improvements, $1,194,085. Good times would seem to have struck the members of the Metnodist Episcopal Church very forcibly. For the support of the ministers there was raised $3,273,337, an average lor each of $319 3S. For the various conncctional enterprises $947,178 14 were contributed, distributed as lollows: For Missions, $493,337 85; for Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, $77,949 19; for Church Extension, $87,437 22; for the Tract Society, $12,837 75; for the Sunday School Union, 13,922 21; for Frecdmen's Aid Society,$51, 867 39; for Education Society, $44, 2 SO 52; for American Bible Society, $26,322 53; for Conference claimauts (worn-out preacbers, widows and orphans), $137,093 48. The members of this Church, ac cording to the report, have no reason to be discouraged. .

The following important laws were passed hy the last legislature: An act siyirig jurors $2 per day and 5 cents mileage each way. An act permitting women to hold any ofilce connected with public schools. Au act authorizing the appointment of two persons of opposite politics to be jury commissioners for the county. The Judge of the Circuit makes the appointments aud the commissioners select men for jurors. An act authorizing count' com missiouers to distribute to the several townships the unexpended 3 per cent, fund to be expended on roads or bridges. This act will put about $5000 upon the roads of this county next September. An act relating to establbhihg a home for pauper children. A matron to bo appointed to take care of, educate and find homes for the pauper children.

-There was a large crowd at the New York Store all day last Saturday purchasing goods. Not only does this house do a large business direct with its customers, but many orders are received by mail, the result of liberal advertising, fair dealing, the lowest prices, and the best goods.
