There was a large gathering of patrons and friends who highly appreciated the exercises of the evening, which consisted of literary performances and music instrumental-and vocal. The closing scene was a beautiful tableau. The exercises were both entertaining and instructive; and much credit is due both teacher and pupils. Observer.
In spite of the opposition' of hy

the ungodly by the hundreds, We

.Business generally for the last two months has been irregular, yet averaged, has been fair, considering the wonderful fluctuations in the weather. The mud embargo stills exists in the couutry, the roads as yet remaining almost impassable for teams to haul empty wagons. We have been visit ed with sun shine, rain, cold and stong winds, and thunderstorms alternately during this month, while the prospects at this time are not at ail favorable for good weather of any duration. This is connected with the singular weather we have experience, aud the bad roads which have existed for about a month have conspired to retard trade in a great measure. With anything like a week's duration of fair weather, there will be a great activity all around.
The Committee recommended that

Representative Biiskirk will return to his home with a reputation for industry and attention to business to which few members of the present legislature can lay claim. He has invariably been at his post during the. sessions of the House, and being placed upon important committees has made it a rule to meet with them night after n ig h t. Th ere a re al ways eight or ton members of a body like the House, who dictate and direct legislation, and it is to this number that Mr. Buskirk belongs. He ha seeuied an appropriation fortheUni-

XIio Biffircst lalr oJf Boots in tlic I5ox t(Make your paper an even dollar and I will take it for a year," said and honest granger who visited the Courier office one day last week. uYou know the city1 papers are only a dollar." He did not get the Courier for one dollar, and left the office to subcribe for a "city paper." The country papers, such as the
Courier, give all the state and general news, congressional, legislative, and a "large amount of miscellaneous readiug matter, the same as the city
papers. But the most important of
all to a resident of this county is the home news,
Do the "city papers" say anything
in regard to the interest of our county? Nothing whatever. Do they contain notices of your schools, cjnirches, court, marriages, deaths, improvements, and a hundred other things of local interest? Not a line. Do they- ever say a word calculated to draw attention to our county
Jand encourage the developement of
its rccources? Never. There are men who take such views of this matter, that unless they are getting as many niches of reading matter in their own as they do in the city paper, they think they are not getting the worth of their money? It reminds us of the the old story of a man who took the largest pair of boots m The box because the price was the same as the smaller pair that fitted him. TUo Temperance OTidal Wave in Brown Couuly;, Nashville Jacksonian:
The Temperance meeting at the court house, last Mouclay night, was largely attended and was a success. Hon. John R. East, of Bloomington, was present, and delivered' an earnest and able address in favor of the Prohi bitipii Amendment to the Constitution. . Mr- East has a big heart, a fertile brain and a mouth as large as that of Henry Clay and when he
opens it he invariably says something. Messrs, Streetcr, Wilson, Jordan and Parker made brief but telling speeches. Mrs. Lorimor being called cn to speak, responded by making a neat and earnest talk. Resolutions, endorsing the course of Messrs Coffey and Buskirk on the temperance question, were unanimously adopted by- a raising vote, amid rapturous applause. After the meeting the Cornet Band, attended by a number of ladies and
gentlemen, repaired to the house of
Hon. R. L .Coffey and discorsed some
of their sweetes and most soul st'r-c
ring music. The Hon. gentleman had retired to his peaceful couch and
eary nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleen" had but a neriod to his
thoughts: but the dulcet sounds soon
broke the spell, and, at the end of the second piece, he was standing in the door. Some one proposed "three cheers for Judge Coffey." The response was given with a vim that awakened the echoes. This was too much for the Judgo, so he squared himself, opened his mouth, and well, he made a good speech. Mr. East, being among the sernftders, closed the exercise with some remarks complimentary to the tern per ance record of Judge Coffey.

of the different aspirants for the suff

The all po tent argument as to the party probabilities will be thefignres of the last contest and none will bo more earnestly canvassed than those of the congressional struggle, and this being the fact, the new B. & O. Red Book congressional edition becomes almost indispensable. No publication of political statistics ever made equals it in extent of information givan, or -in comprehensive arrangement. It shows not only the result of the election of 1880, but the result as well of the election of 1S78. The Republican, Democratic and Greenback vote for the two elections is piesented separately and comparisons made of gains or losses of the different parties. Total votes are also the subject of comparison, and this exhaustive showing is made of every congressional district in the Union by counties The book is one of one hundred and twelve pnges, isa marvel of typographical beauty, being printed upon an elegantly Ha ished paper, and the cover is one of the most exquisite things in the way of artistic design issued kir many a year.
