THE COU R 1 ICR'S SCOOP ON ALL THE OTHER PAPERS! In August of last year the house of a wealthy citizen namen Ebersole, near Heltonville, Lawrence county was robbed of a large amount of valuables while the family wore attending a political meeting at Bedford. Ebersole, it is said, was a close, miserly sort of a man and kept all of his wealth secreted about his house rather than deposit it in a bank. Not' much was said in the papers at the time about the robbery, and it was thought that the amount ot plunder was not very great. It now turns out that ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS would scarcely cover what was tost, and Ebersoles anxiety about keeping the matter from the papers is ap parent. In making his returns to the asse sor the amount of personal property given in by him was only about $500, and this kind of a return he had been giving in every .year thus hoidihg himself liable to a prosecution for perjury every time he made oath to his assessment pap ers. The okl man was not idle, however, after the robbery. Many strangers have been noticed to visit the premises frequently since the occurrence, and they, no doubt, were detectives who were working up a clue. Ebersole had previously in his employ several laborers on his place but the robbery could not b traced to them .it the time although one of those who recently gave the whole. thing away turns out to have worked several months-en Ebersol's place. Recently several men were arrested at Bedford for burglary and counterfeiting. Detective Rathburn, of the United States services capt tired a counterfeiter in the neighbor hood of Turin el ton Lawrence county, and it was this fellow who first hint cd that he knew something of the Ebersole robbery. The pumping process was vigorously applied and finally all of the facts in the case were fully and completely given, except as to where the piuudjr was concealed. One of the men arrested
for burglary was then put through
the same" '-bumbtnsr process, ahT he
corroborated all that the other ha

started for Bloomiogton, where they intended taking the car. An old
trunk was filled with the stolen aiti
cles, wrapped in a piece of carpet,
and placed in the front part of the buggy. About four miles from
Bloomingt'n the horse and buggy was abandoned, and the men proceeded on tneir journey on foot, carrying the trunk. They arrived at the suburbs about 3 o'clock on a Sunday morning, and alter a consultation over the matter it was decided to bury the plunder in Dunn's woods. It was also decided to bury itr in several places so if one hiding place was discovered the others might not be According to the confession of one of these men, the stolen property consisted of a lot ot govern n. eat bond, which were found sewed up in a matrass in the house which vas robbed, two shot-bags lull of gold and silver coin, a large wad of greenbacks roli-
aud xi pmoner named i-d-on. I hey scattered about town and amused themselves until 11:30 when, after procuring picks and shovels, the line of march was taken up for Dunn's woods. The Bloomiogton delegation consisted of J. C, Dolan, Doc Bates, Deputy Sheriff Strong, City marshal Reeves, Wal Browning, Jus. Kelloy, Falknor, and the Courier reporter. To make a long story short. OIL WAS STRUCK AT ONCE. Reeves had not taken out a half dozen spades full of dirt, near the southwest, corner of the graveyard, before the spade came in contact with some thing which proved to be the trunk. It was hastily dug out and the contents examined, in it were seven pieces of table silverware, one gold watch, one silver watch, 1C4 "daddies dollars" and a lot of jewelry. This was taken ctui'geol by the Bedford officers, and search was made for the places where the bulk of the bonds and money were concealed. The prisoner could only describe the locations as he got it from one party who buried the money, and after searching until near daylvjht, work was given up until this (Friday) afternoon, The lied lord party tried io exact a promise from the courier not to give the tiling away, but it lias already leaked out, and as a re ward of one-ha.f of the amotrtt recovered is ottered, many of our citi zens will, no doubt, lake a hand in th search to-daj. It is estimated that over $4-0,000 nr boxds and cash is buried in three places, near the quarry. The men who were digging last night are all "know nothings'' to day, and when questioned about the matter appear very innocent, but the Courier is a newspaper, and is determined it a bonan za is buried in Dunn's woods our people shall have a hand in unearthing it, and &hare in the large reward offered. A lage number of people
are visiting Dunn's woods to-diy
Friday. The recovered stolen prop-
etty is now at the National House,
and may be seen in room No. 8 any
time to-day Ten nan t, of the Clo
ven! ale Herald, came down on the freight this morning to take a hand
in digging for the wealth.
