For the Courier. . , . . . BeTivab and Christianity, Let us hope that the revival at the
M. E. Church has been productive ot much good. Very macy announced their determination to lead a better ife. Many very worldly men and women: sought salvation through the medium ot these meetings and became "converted," as the common phrase designates a charge of heart. All of these persons were no doubt earnest at the time, but how many of them will continue so? On the list we find the names of a number who make the saine profession al most every time a revival is held,
only to become back sliders in a short time afterwards. But if only one
soul is saved out of the many, that much iiood will have been done at
least. It seems that this revival.
like all others, was intended only for sinners out of the church. At least
the sinners in the church a pparcn tly
thought so. What is Christianity? Does the simple act of joining the church make one a christian? It
appears to be taken by common consent that it does. It seems to us
that much good might be accomp
lished by laboring for the couvcrtiou.
or re-eon vertion.- of sinners in the
church, yet there appears to have
been . no effort in that direction. ..- . , " -- . . Many are deluding themselves with
the thought that they are christians
as long as they can make the world
believe 60. There are others who
think that by attending church re
gularly and taking part in the meet
ings is enough to cause theun to be
classed as christians. They do not appear to realize the fact that their
conduct in every day life is known and watched, and it is their hypocri
sy that is keeping thousands out of church to-day We arc speaking of
no one church or congregation we mean them all. During the present revival there weie some taking a
prominent part, even to the extent of
exhorting their betters to "come to
Christ," who could have shown to
the world that they were earnest in
theirdesire to 'live true christians
had they prostrated themselves at
the altar and asked for mercy at the
hands of the Almighty for their
doubly-dyed sinful souls. But no!
It appears that revivals are only for
recru tin's: the number of members of
the churches. Cucrch Member.

The dogs m Owen county are d'in off fast. Poison, to protect the jthecp, is supposed to be the cause. " , Saw that the constitutional amendments have been ratified and it is the duty of the Legislature to enact a xegistry- law, the Courier hopes that . tk ly will do the work well; In many localities' registry Jaws have been used to hide frauds upon the ballot box; In fact, if the laws bad been framed with that expressed purpose in view they could hot- have bten made to work better than they do in
that direction. In Chicago, for in-1
btance, (and for aught we know, - throughout the State of Illinois), ; registration boards are authorized to register the names of voters -without requiring the same to appear in per- , son. No better plan than this for i stuffing the ballot box c uld have
beensdevised under the garb of law. j
What is there to hinder corrup regis-V
t ration officers conspiring with re;eate?s and registering the latter nntler fictitious names? If Indiana must have a registry law, let it be a stringent one; the more so the better. Let it be.so framed that every voter shall have to appear in person and bej registered or not be permitted to vote, and, furthermore, let not only the names of the voters be registered, as is don j in some place, but also their places of residence. A law which shall include the features we have named may be made productive of good results, but a registry law without 4hoss provisions would be a shallow mockery as an attempt to purify the bahot Lox '

TbC3i3ts Arwine'n Death. Last week we made mention of a
fatal accident to Thomas Arwine,
formerly of Bloomington. The Bed
ford Magnet gives the full particu
lars, as follows:
Thomas A. Arwine who has been Jiving some six miles north of Helton-
ville, and working in the employ of
.Gilim 4c Davon in the stave business,
came to Beiford last Friday to attend court. When the Bloomington
accommodation train went north at
8 o'clock p. m., he took passage for Bloomington with Robert Ciark, (his wife's cousin,) James B. Clark, (his wife's brother,) and Rebecca Bagwell, (his wife's sister.) Before reaching Guthrie he stepped out of the ladies car saying he wanted to speak to a man when the train stopped at Guthrie, After the train had passed that place and he did not return to his f friends, tbey looked for him through the train, but without finding him. The brother audvSi3ter returned on the first train south. Sat urday morning, and enquiring at Guthrie, found that he had not Deen seen there. They then beeaine still more alarmed at his absence. On arriving at Salt Creek station, the body of their brother-in-law was brought on the train, and Mr. Wil
liam McFaclden informed them that he had discovered the body about daylght, lying across a sill of the north or 3d Salt Creek bridge, a short distance from the south end. The wounds about bis face and neck indicated that be had fallen ofl the train just as it entered the bridge. His cap was lying at .the souiif entrance. An empty pint flask was in one of his pockets. An inquest was held by Coroner Hamm shortly after the train brought the remains to Bedford, but nothing additional was
brought out by the examination of
witnesses. The deceaseds face was badly bruised, the mouth and nose were broken, and the left side of the
neck was bruised and torn. Arwinei
was about 35 years of age, and leaves a wife and three children.
