Commencement June 1 For Class Os 1961 At Syracuse School Dr. Arlo Schilling, president of North Central College. Naperville, Illinois, will address the 1961 graduating class at commencement exercises Thursday evening, June 1, at Syracuse high school. Rev. J. Ross Richey, pastor of the Methodist Church in Syracuse. will give the baccauaurate sermon Sunday, May 28. Formerly assistant superintendent of schools at Elkhart, Dr. Schilling went from Elkhart to North Central College. He was recently elected president of the school which is celebrating its centennial this year. Dr. Schilling also has been a high school principal. Several years ago he was one of five young men selected to do special work for the graduate school in education at Purdue University where he was graduated with a doctor of philosophydegree in 1958. —- His earlier graduate studies were in education, philosophy and economics at Bowdoin College <Maine).. City College of New York, and Indiana University where he received his master’s degree in education in 1950. In 1956 he was in Europe for graduate study in education. He received his under graduate degree from Huntington College. Huntington, Indiana. , During World War II he served with the army in the European Theater of Operations where he received . the purple heart with oak leaf clusters and three battle stars. i 1 Dr. Schilling brings a wealth of experience to his position and is an interesting and stimulating speaker. The title of his address for this occasion will be "What It Takes.”
Elect Earl Roberts 1961 FFA President The Syracuse FJ’A. Chapter was called to order by Earl Roberts. vice president. May 15, for its regular meeting T*he nominating committee then presented their report on a slate of officers for 1961-6 G. They- were: Earl Roberts president; Burton Butt, vice -president; Joe Hibschman, secretary; Roger Shuder, treasurer; Sam Bushong, sentinel; Jerry Popenfoose, reporter; and Danny Jones, parliamentarian. This group of officers was then dulyelected. The losing garden' seed sales team then treated the wining team to refreshments. The SyracuScene . . . Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McVay from Indianapolis are at the lake opening their cottage on Natti Crow Beach for the summer, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Duckwall and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Williams, Steve Williams and Vona Schacht were in Fort Wayne Friday attending the regional track meet and to see Bill Duckwall, run the hurdles.
