Red Shield Will Take Papers; Old Clothes The familiar Red Shield trucks of The Salvation Army throughout the Fort Wayne area are especially busy during the present house cleaning season. Income from the collection and grading of newspapers and magazines supplied about 40% of the cost of maintaining the center program where seventy five men can be accomodated with complete housjng facilities including sleeping, eating, clothing, laundry. recreation, etc. Brigadier L. Peterson in charge of the operation in Fort Wayne' says the price of paper is present ly lower than usual, so handling mixed paper such as wrappings, cheap pulp magazines, cereal boxes is a losing proposition. Disposal of them by-some other means is preferable.. High type magazines. newspapers, and corrugated board when handled in quantity.. are more readily taken by paper mills and manufactured into various sized boxes, insulation, and roofing. Also in need are contributions of clothing, shoes, utensils, dishes and furniture. Clothing and shoes are carefully sorted find distributed through the Red Shield stores, while rags are used in manufacutred items. - Furniture, always in demand, furnishes work for the shop men as in the carpenter shop for repairing. paint shop for brightening up. upholstering shop for covered items, stoves and washers for reconditioning. Total support of the center is from handling paper and discarded material. The Fort Wayne operation is one Os 122 over the ration, and usually has representation from every state at one time during the year. When it is remembered that Indiana men are receiving aid in other centers, the number helped here would approximate the number of Hoosiers for the area, could all men be returned to their home communities. Grocery bags and cartons make excellent containers for clothing, shoes, and other small items.
