Osberne Predectien Manager - _ , - t — : Bl * lt - J -A lltri * a " The Fire Department * The local fire department is to be complimented on its recovery from the disastrous fire which last March destroyed its headquarters and virtually all of its equipment By prudent planning, with the wise guidance of town and township officials, equipment has been purchased which is far superior to that being used prior to last year's emergency. Pumping, capacity of the department has been increased from 1.250 gallons a minute on two trucks to 3.000 gallons on three. Where the department actually had but one real heavy piece of equipment before, a 1952 pumper owned by the township, it now has three It should be, remembered that anyone of these three pieces of equipment, manned and operated properly, should be sufficient to handle a sizeable blaze. Where the department before had a hodgepodge of various equipment. its two main pumpers are now identically constructed for ease of operation—an important factor on any department This will also save money in maintenance and make it easier to get replacement parts! It was a costly lesson, but the department is now housed'in a more likely'location, and in a building that is far safer for storage of this valuable ,equipment The Journal would like to see the department continue to make the progress it has under Chief William Hess, with the cooperation of all of our elected officials. We would like to <=ee a man on* duty 24 hours a day at the fire station, to answer fire and police calls, and even drive the first piece of equipment to the fire to Save valuable minutes, lives. snd property as paid firemen do in so many towns And of course we would also like to see a permanent pub-licly-owned fire station, too. Whatever progress will be made in the future, however, will haie a sound basis on which to get started.
