COMMUNITY NEWS Solomon Creek SOLOMON CREEK. Ind.— Rev. C. H. Dobbins called on May and Esther Zimmerman Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Cloy Eller spent several days in the home of her son and family. Rev. and Mrs. David Eller, in South Bend. Mrs. Blanche Blue and Mrs. Phyllis Brown called on Mrs. Manford Mishler Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Weldy and daughters were guests in the home of Mrs. Weldy’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Dresser Saturday. Our volunteer firemen’s convention is quite a noisy affair. It often takes 15 minutes to bring the meeting to order. So this year, "Shorty” Johnson, our chairman, tried a new approach. Amid all the noise. Shorty got up and began to speak. At first, you couldn’t hear a word he said. But he kept on until things suddenly quieted right down. Mrs. Helen Miller and Mrs. Blanch Blue called on Mrs. Laura Hibschman Monday afternoon. Class No. 6 had a class meeting Friday evening at the parsonage with Rev. and Mrs. Schroeder. HOSPITAL NOTES Charles R. Fisher. 212 East Carroll was admitted Wednesday to Goshen Hospital for minor surgery’ He was released Monday. Alfred J. Graff. R-R- 2. had minor surgery Thursday at Goshen Hospital. He was released Friday. Tillman R. Coy. R.R. 3, underwent major surgery at Goshen Hospital Friday. Robert Robinson. R.R. 1. entered Goshen Hospital Saturday for medical treatment. Mrs. John Fleming was discharged from Elkhart Hospital Friday and is convalesing at the home of her daughter, Mrs. j Rebecca Kitson. Oakwood Park Rev. and Mrs. Kennard Robinson enjoyed Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. L J. Byland. Afternoon callers were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Blankenhorn and family of Mishawaka. Mrs. Cloy Eiler has returned home after spending a week with her son. Rev. David Eiler and family of South Bend. Rev. and Mrs Norris of Zanes ville spent a couple days last week at their cottage. Ladies Os Round Table Mrs. Leonard Barnhart entertained the Ladies of the Round Table Monday evening at her home. Mrs. Clayton Mock presided during the regular business meeting. Mrs. Paul Bixler presented the program, which was on the subject of “What Can I Do When I Retire.” Miss Ethel Bowser poke on Conservation of Water Supply. The next meeting will be a Christmas party December 19 at Foo and Faye s. Guests Sunday afternoon of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Yeager and amily were Mrs. Yeager’s sister Mrs. Andy Wise and Mr. Wise of Goshen. CHESK-CHA-MAY The Chesk-Cha-May camp fire girls went to the Goshen jail November 30. The man in charge told us what he had to do and explained different things to us and gave us little booklets on “A Code For Teenagers.’’ Then he and another man showed us though the entire jail and we got to see the people who were in jail. When we got through looking around he told us why the people were in jail. Then we had to go home. Our drivers were Mrs. Butt and Mrs. Stoelting. Connie Wright, scribe Woman's Relief Corps Election of officers for the new year was the main order of business Monday night at the regular meeting of the Women’s Relief Corps. Members elected to office were Mrs. Estella Swartz, president; Mrs. Ethel Guy. senior vice president; Mrs. Lossee Rinker, junior vice president: Mrs. Elizabeth Pollock, treasurer; Mrs. John Craw, chaplain; Mrs. Sam Searfoss. conductor; Mrs. Jesse Rex. guard; Mrs. Nelle Sloan, as sistant guard. Delegates named for the convention are Mrs. Pollock and Mrs. Craw. Other business included appointment of a committee to call on sick members, arrangement of Christmas gifts for the “adopted” girl at Knightstowm. and balloting on a re-instated member. The charter was draped for Mrs. Ida Howell, a past national president. Miss Della Amsler of Rensselear returned with Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Amsler and family who spent Thanksgiving week end there. Miss Amsler, sister of Mr. Amsler, was here Monday and Tuesday and returned to Rennsselear Wednesday with Mrs Amsler while he attended a conference at Purdue. Tillman Coy is still very ill after major surgery last Friday. He is In Goshen Hospital.

Wed. Afternoon Club Mrs. Lewis S. Immel was hostess to the Wednesday Afternoon Club November 30 with sixteen members present and one guest, Mrs. J. Ross Richey. A letter of resignation from Mrs. Lou Sprague was read. A member of many years standing, Mrs. Sprague has been conlined to the Austin Nursing Home in Goshen for several years. Altho she is necessarily inactive in the club, she maintains a keen interest in its programs and enjoys reports of its activities. In placing her name on the inactive list, the club extended to her an honorary membership. Mrs. E. L. Fosbrink presented the program which was a book report on the autobigraphy of Pearl Buck, entitled, “My Several Worlds” dwelling on her life in China and United States and the books she has written illustrating life in China and the influence of national as well as world events. Candies were served by the hostess during the social hour. Burson Begins Second Season At lowa College Ted Burson, sophomore at Penn State College in Oskaloosa, lowa, is back on the basketball squad and is one of nine returning vets on the Penn team. As a freshman, the 6’6” Hoosier was top scorer with a 350 point total. Almost half of the squad this year are Hoosiers. Coach Taylor Hayes is a former Sweetzer high school coach and many of the boys were coached by him during high school days. Penn Statesmen opened their 1969-61 basketball season this week again Central College of Pella. Burson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Burson of Papakeechie Lake and a former Syracuse high school star. Primary Mothers Club: Twenty members and seventeen guests of the Primary Mothers Club met Monday evening at Foo and Faye’s for a Christmas bazaar. Mrs. John Kroh was chairman of the event with Mrs. Max Kleinknight. Mrs. Jay Brouwer, Mrs. Delbert Whitehead and Mrs. Adrian Zollinger assisting. The evening was spent with the auction sale as the main program, and socially. Mrs. Carroll Koble won the door prize. The next meeting will be a Christmas dinner at Foo and Faye’s December 19 at 6:30. Reservations should be made with Mrs. Brouwer by Friday December 16. Intermediate Mothers: Mrs. George Bushong was hostess for the Intermediate Mothers Club Monday evening assisted by Mrs. F. A. Rhoades and Mrs. Delbert Brown. Following the regular business meeting. Mrs. Isabelle Stahley president, introduced the guest speaker, Vernon Becgman, who spoke on the subject “Sex and the Abundant Life.” The talk was in the nature of a challenge to parents and church school teachers to present the subject of sex to the younger generation on an educational level. Mrs. Vearl Gaff won the sunshine gift. Mrs. James Stucky will entertain the club for its Christmas meeting and gift exchange December 19. The smart man knows what he doesn’t know.
