It has been estimated that the School Safety Patrol has saved literally thousands of lives since it was originated by the motor club in 1920. In order to continue this impressive record, the Patrol needs your cooperation. Patrol members have been trained to keep people safe. Do your part to help them!

A 1,716 decrease in unemployment insurance claims during the week ending Sept. 24 brought the state-wide total down to 38,184. Richard A. Phillips, director of the Indiana Employment Security Division, said today. The number of initial claims dropped to 5,709 from 6,021 the week before. Additional recalls of auto workers and the return of coal miners to work in the Terre Haute and Vincennes area following the settlement of the railroad dispute helped lower the volume of claims for continuing weeks of unemployment Phillips said a total of 32,475 continued claims were filed, compared to 33,879 the week before. A white elephant sale also is planned and it was decided to change he opening hour to 7:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned with the giving of the Lord's Prayer in unison. Autumn Garden Work Helps Crop Next Year A little work in the home garden this fall will help to insure a good vegetable crop next summer That’s the observation of Leslie Hafen, Purdue University horticulturist. He lists these
timely suggestions: All refuse—such as corn stalks and vines—should be removed from the garden. After the garden has been cleaned, broadcast a little rye, wheat or oats over the area. This will not only prevent wind and water erosion, but will give the gardener something green to look at during the bleak days of winter.
