Purdue Lists Dates For Fly Free Seeding To avoid possible severe damage to their 1961 wheat crop from Hessian fly, Indiana farmers are urged by Gilbert P. Walker, Purdue University extension agronomist, to observe “fly free" seeding dates. These range from Sept. 22 in the northern tier of counties to Sept. 27 in the lattitude of Lafay-ette-Tipton-Port land; Sept. 30 in the Rockville-Indlanapolis-Winchester latitude: Oct. 3 in the latitude of Sullivan-Bloom-ington-Greensburg, and Oct. 8 in the Evansville-Rockport area. These dates apply to all, wheat varieties except Dual and the new, short strawed, early Monon. These two varieties, because of their resistance to Hessian fly. may be seeded from three to four weeks earlier than the dates indicated. When seeded early and well fertilized with fertilizer high in nitrogen. Dual and Monon are heavy stooling. leafy, fast-grow-ing varieties that can furnish Malatable and nutritious late fall and winter pasture. Fall grazing and clipping trials showed no reduction in yields below the unclipped, according to Walker. When seeded in early September neither variety joined in the fall even when very rank growth developed. Dual has replaced much of the rye formerly used for pasture and winter cover. Because of later heading it can be plowed un der at the right stage of growth, wet weather often prevents plowing under rye until it is headed out and too far advanced for best results. Walker explains. Copies of the 1960 Summef Indiana certified Seed Directory are available at county agricultural agents* offices and from the Seed Certification Service, Life Science Building. Purdue University, Lafayette The new directory lists Sources of Indiana certified seed wheat, winter oats, winter barley, rye and tall fescue. More than 12.000 acres of wheat were field inspected by Seed Certification staff inspectors. The four major wheat varie ties for fall seeding are Dual. Knox. LaPorte and Vernullion. Acreages certified are Dual. 1.390: Knox 3.603; LaPorte 2.686 and Vermillion 1.540 Monon is an early, Hessian fly resistant variety being multiplied state

wide on 3,651 acres. De Bo is. recommended for use in southern Indiana, is the only winter oat variety certified in the state. Growers of Hudson winter barley produced 133 acres of certified seed. Although Kenbar is rapidly becoming the major variety throughout the state. Farmers are encouraged to consider their own seed needs earlv since the supply of good seed probably will be exhausted before seeding time. Employment Increases No layoffs occurred during the week ending Sept. 10 and unemployment insurance claims decreased to 40,861 from 44,369 the week before. Richard A. Phillips, director of the Indiana Employment Security Division, said 23 of the agency’s 30 local offices reported fewer initial claims. A total of 5.686 initial claims were filed throughout the state. Many claimants were recalled to jobs as the steel, automobile, and electrical machinery industries increased production and the number of claims for continued weeks of unemployment dropped to 35.175 from 37,453 the week before. How To Use Gourds Gardeners who are growing gourds for use as ornaments, birdhouses or exhibits have been offered some suggestions by Leslie Hafen. horticulturist at Purdue UniversityHafen says / the larger gourds should be left on the vines until the outer rind has hardened and turned from green to an amber color. The gourds should then be cut from the viAes, hung up by the stem in a dry. warm place and left until the seeds rattle on the inside. To finish to a high luster, Hafen suggests that the skin be scraped off and the guard sanded down. He adds that dippertype or bottleneck gourds may be used for birdhouses. REAL COOL EATING Ice cream production in Indiana last year amounted to 26,862,000 gallons, two percent larger than 1958 and the largest of 44 years of record. Sherbet output amounted to 1,144,000 gallons. up 14 percent from a year ago. according to state-federal agricultural statisticians at Purdue University. Call News to GL7-3666
