Junior League Baseball Begins Tenth Year Here Little league baseball is beginning its tenth year at Syracuse this week. 141 boys are enrolled for the junior league teams and 45 in the pony league. Sponsors of the four junior league teams again this year are State Bank of Syracuse, Pilch er’s Shoes. Rotary and Lions Clubs. Pony league sponsors include Lakeland Produce. Carolyn Sue Denton Scholarship Winner Miss Carolyn Sue Denton, daughter of Mrs. Eva I. Denton, is the first recipient of a scholarship given by the Widgwa chapter of the National Secretaries Association. The scholarship is for SSO a year. Carolyn plans to enter South Bend college of commerce in September, where she will take an 18 months secretarial course. She is a 1960 graduate of Syracuse High School, where she achieved an outstanding record in commercial subjects. Big Pike . . . Tom Firestone was winning pitcher, striking out eight. Losing pitchers were Tom Knoop and Norman Grubbs of Warsaw. Down Eagles, 8-3 Syracuse Yellow Jackets defeated the Eagles 8-3 in a baseball game played Sunday night at Columbia City. Winning pitcher was Tom Firestone, giving up two hits, striking out five, and walking two. Lynn Barnes was losing pitcher. Syracuse had eight hits and each team ‘ committed three errors. Mrs. Martha Pryor of Pasadena. Calif, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Elsa Grieger. She arrived Sunday from Chicago where she 'bent the past two weeks. Mrs. Pryor plans to be here most of the summer.

Boat Registration Good For Three Years Indiana conservation officers are busy filling requests for boat registrations. A boats powered by an engine of more than six horsepower must be registered, according to the Indiana law. Size and length have no bearing on the law. Boat owners using Indiana lakes from more than 90 days should apply for Indiana registration The registration is good for three years unless the boat is Applications can be obtained from boat sale agencies, some sporting goods stones and the county clerk’s office. The license fee is $3. Start Garden Club; Name To Be Chosen A group of 21 ladies met at the home of Mrs. Ernest Bushong for the purpose of beginning a garden club. Mrs. Oscar Benson, member of the Goshen Club, presided at the meeting. Mrs. Benson was chosen to act as temporary chairman. Mrs. Herschel Leatherman will serve as temporary secre Vary. It was resolved that a garden club be formed in this community, the name to be chosen at the next meeting. Mrs. W. E. Long. Mrs. Nelson Miles, and Mrs. Einar Anderson were chosen to write the Constitution and By-Laws. Mrs. Harold Gray. Mrs. Ernest Bushong, and Mrs. John Abshire were chosen for the membership committee for election of officers. Mrs. James Kirkwood assisted in serving refreshments. The next meeting will be July 7. at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. W. E. Long. The program will include a tour of the Long garden. National Golf Day At Maxwelton Saturday There were foul winners from a field of 36 who participated in the National Golf Day at the Maxwelton golf course Saturday. Those, who with their handicaps bested Billy Casper s 67. were Joe Chandler. Mel Kowalka. Don Wogoman. and Elly Blakesley. The four winners will receive medals. Mrs. Blanche Thornburg entertained the Friday bridge club Wednesday evening at her home.

TRANSFERRED TO SOUTH BEND HOSPITAL John Yoder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Yoder, who suffered skull injuries in a fall from a tree, was transferred to Memorial Hospital at South Bend Saturday for a skull operation. He will remain in the hospital for several weeks, his mother said, and is in Room 561. Rev. And Mrs. Satre To Spend Week At Camp During the week of June 19-25, Pastor and Mrs. Carl H Satre will be at Camp Lutherwald near Howe. Camp Lutherwald is the summer youth camp of the Indiana Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. Pastor Satre will be an instructor and chaplain. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Maggart of Fort Wayne were guests of Mr. and Mrs Court Slabaugh for several days last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Finton are visiting their son, Sgt. Patrick Finton. in Yakima, Washington. En route they visited Mrs. Elmer Myron, Mr. Finton’s sister, in LaVerne. Calif. They will visit Mrs. Finton’s sister, Mrs. Donald Shaw in Ironwood, Michigan, on their return trip.
