Hoosier hunters are having a heyday this month with the sea son in full swing. Over 400 hunters were registered at the TriCounty game preserve Tuesday when the pheasant season opened. No deer have been reported except for a few shy ones which eluded bows and arrows. One deer must have been seriously wounded by a hit and run dirver who thought better of his action and reported the incident to authorities the next day but too late to find the wounded animal. Reports of few deer in local hunting areas and fowl, since the hunting season opened, indicates that the birds and animals sense the tremendous numbers of hunters suddenly in the field. Anyway, they are are scarce these first days and i the kill has been small, according to most reports. K. KMcGarvey and Clem Lisor. local sportsmen, were out a few hours Tuesday morning and said they “didn’t see a feather." Thursday night’s pep parade and bonfire brought out some t 300 fans in spite of the downi pour an hour before the parade was scheduled. Principal Amsler said the bonfire was a little j slow in starting but took off at great speed when a gust of wind from the right direction hit it For a first parade and outdoor rally. Amsler was quite pleased and the comments of a few fans makes him feel that it will get ■ better each year. Stray Buck Shot Hits Hunter At Game Area John Filippone of 420 West 10th Street. Mishawaka, was the victim of a hunting accident Tuesday a! the Tri-County game ; preserve when he was splattered bv stray buck shot which hit mostlv in the face. Take n immediately to a Syracuse doctor’s office, most of the shot was removed and no serious i injury was reported. Jack Clark, township constable. investigated the accident which he said was listed as acs were preferred. Clark reported that over 600 hunters registered at the game preserve Tuesday but that the kill was very low. A few arrests were made by Conservation Officer Higgins for shooting along | the roadway. Adult classes in swimming and classes in boating will be added to the 1960 program. Rule said. Officer Money stated that the local program already had achieved statewide recognition. He stressed with much emphasis how accidents can be avoided and lives can be saved if people are taught what to do in emergencies. and to respect and observe rules of water activities. Two films demonstrated . the few simple steps in learning to swim and handle all types of boats. The well attended meeting was held at the Wawasee Restaurant where a turkey dinner was served from tables attractively decorated for the Thanks giving season.
