Boord of Zone Appeals Grants Two Variances At a special meeting of the Board of Zoning Appeals held Monday evening, the appeals of Thomas Buskirk and Stanley Grimes were unanimously granted. Buskirk asked approval of his petition to change a proposed building on his miniature golf course. Grimes’ appeal concerned a proposed garage to be erected on the front of his property at Kale Island which would be 2 ,feet closer to the road than the 15 feet specified by the Zoning Ordinance. Appeals of Ernest Rogers and Dr. Wendell Shank will be considered at a special meeting Monday 29 June following legal publication this week. Medusa Street Petition A petition signed by eighteen residents on Medusa Street, was presented by Mr. and Mrs. James Butt of 455 Medusa, requesting rezoning of an area, between the road and railroad right of way. from industrial to residential. Inasmuch as the Appeals Board does not have authority to change land use. the matter was referred to the next meeting of the Plan Commission which will meet next on 14 July. There was considerable discucsion concerning the particular piece of land during which the Board suggested that the residents who signed the petition try to work out a solution with Charles Rock, present owner of the property. United Fund Considers 1960 Budget Requests The Executive Board of Budget and Admissions Committee of the United Fund of Kosciusko County met Thursday night at the United Fund office to consider budget requests for the 1960 year from participating agencies. Walter Martin, chairman of Budget and Admissions reported on six new agencies requesting funds from the local United Fund campaign next year. The agencies reouestine admission were: Indiana Citizens Council American Social Hvgiene Assn.. United Seamen's Sendee. International Social Service. American Hearing Society and Blinded Veterans Assn. It was recommended by the Budget and Admissions Committee that further study be made on one of the agencies for possible admission to the United Fund of Kosciusko County. It was felt that many of the services offered by these new agents are already being provided by existing member agencies of our own United Fund of Kosciusko County. Preliminary budgets from United Service Organizations. National Travelers Aid. Salavation Army and Muscular Dystrophy Association were approved at this meeting. David Weaver Attends DePauw University David Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delos Weaver, is attending a four-day guidance clinic at DePauw University this week. David plans to enter the university as a freshman in the fa11.~7 Designed to assist students in the formulation of educational plans, the program includes an extensive battery of tests and interviews to determine occupational interests and special aptitudes. A specially trained counse lor from the DePauw faculty is assigned to each student. Students live on the campus in university dormitories during their stay and have access to facilities for tennis, bowling and swimming.

In United States Service Graduates from Boot Camp Tommy L. Auer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Auer of 131 W. Boston. Syracuse. graduated from recruit training 30 May at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. 111. The graduation exercises, marking the end of nine weeks of “boot camp”, included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries. In nine weeks of instruction, the “raw recruit” is developed into a Navy Bluejacket, ready for duty with the fleet. Graduates Marine Lance Cpl.. Thomas M. Tuttle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Parker of Route 1, Syracuse, graduated 29 May from ABC Defense School at the Division Schools Center. Ist Marine Division. Camp Pendleton. Calif. The fourweek course is designed to train officer and enlisted personnel in- defense against Atomic, Biological and Chemical Warfare agents. CADET CONNOLLY TOURS FLORIDA AIR FORCE BASE Cadet James C. Connolly, son of Mrs. Joy Sims of 630 Front Street. Syracuse, was one of a group of 600 second classmen from the United States Military Academy at West Point to be guests of the Air Proving Ground Center. 5-10 June at Eglin AFB. Fla. where he received Air Force training as part of his academic studies. Included on the agenda of air indoctrination of Eglin * AFB facilities were demonstrations of Air Rescue operations and techniques and a trip through the world-famous APGC Climatic Projects Laboratory', the giant deep freeze-oven where aircraft and missies are subjected to temperatures ranging from 65 degrees below to 165 degrees above F- as part of their test programs. Briefings were also given by instructors from Air University. Maxwell AFB Ala. on the mission, operation, and scope of the Air Defense Command, the Tactical Air Command, and the Strategic Air Command. The cadets departed Eglin AFB 10 June to visit Army and Navy installations. They will complete their tour and return to the US. Military Academy on 26 June. GOSHEN FAMILY MOVES TO CROWDALE AT WAWASEE Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Mignery of Goshen recently purchased a home from Mr. and Mrs. Abshire at Crowdale. R.R 2. and Cedar Point Road, and plan to make it their permanent residence. The transaction was made through Earle Waltz, realtor. Daughter of William Hess, a foreman at Weatherhead's Mrs. Mignery is the former Meredith Hess and was bom and raised in Svracuse. Mr Mignery is employed at the Dyget Upholstery Shop in Elkhart. They have two children. Pat who is 6. and 3year old Cindy.
Firemen's Fire Will Demonstrate Equipment William Hess, chief of the Syracuse Fire Department, has announced that there will be a demonstration of fire fighting equipment Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on south Huntington Street. A house will be set on fire. John Kauffman and Stan Thompson, engineers from Elkhart Brass Mfg. Co., wall be here with new type nozzles and thermo couplings to show firemen what degree of heat is in rooms and how quickly this heat can be reduced. Other demonstrations will include use of Scott Air Pac and fire repellant suits. Hess states that the demonstration will be of educational value to all firemen and the public is welcome to watch the demonstration. ATTENDS GARDEN SHOW _ Mrs. Oscar Benson recently served on a panel of judges for a flower show in Indian Village Park. The show was put on by the Shamrock Garden Club of Fort Wayne. Mrs. Defoe Ecklebarger of Goshen served on the same panel.
