, Sectional Tourney At Syracuse In February For the third consecutive year, « l the local sectional basketball tournament will be played in the Syracuse gym 26. 27, 28 February and 1 March. Announcement of «i sectional tourney sites was made in Indianapolis Friday by the Indiana High School Athletic Aa- , soclation. . Columbia City and Larwill ' from Whitley County will participate with the thirteen county teams. Including Warsaw, which is the same line-up as in past t years. r Winner «pf the sectional at Syracuse will advance to the Elkhart regional along with section_al champions from Elkhart, “South Bend and Plymouth. Winner of this regional meet will play in the Fort Wayne state semi-final games and the state A finals will be played in Indianapolis. a Jackets Score Victory Over Milford 68-59 Syracuse Yeilowjackets de- • f*|ated the Milford Trojans by a ijcbre of 68-59 in the Milford gym Zriday night. A la a rough and tumble, see-saw first half. It was anyone's ball frame. Tied 8 all at the end of the first period, the Trojans led by one slim point. 26-25. at half 4F-hne. Going in leaps and bounds the Jackets pulled ahead early in the third quarter leading 47-36 as m the gun sounded. • In the final” stanza, the Jackets held the lead. Milford, working hard for the ball came to within four points of the Jackets several times but Syracuse was nine points ahead as the gun sounded the end of a thrill packed game. Bill Dorsey held high place honors for the winning Jackets with 21 points, followed by Swenson with 17. Fleischauer bucketed 27 for Milford's high point _ honors. m The only foul outs of the game were Bob Swenson of Syracuse (continued on page 10) , "•Tom Auer Receives Promotion In ROfC Tom Auer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Auer, of Syracuse, has been promoted to corporal in the ROTC battalion at Kemper Military School. Boonville. Mo., in m special order issued by Major IT. S. Timber lake, head off Kemper's ROTC program. } Auer is a high school sophomore, attending Kemper for his O second year. Will Award Trophies To All-Touraey Team Individual trophies will be i awarded to the All-County Tournament basketball team by the Warsaw Times-Union. This is the second year the Times-Union has awarded these trophies. For the first time this year, selection of the eight honor play: ers will be made by ballots of the twelve head coaches thereby making the choices unanimous of the entire county representation. „ The first team will be com-, prised of the eight players receiving, the most votes from the coaches for their performances in the tourney. Each of the eight will receive a trophy. All 0 other players who receive votes will be included on the honorable mention list. Awarding of trophies probably will be made at the pre-sectional fish fry to be held in February. Each coach, between halves of the championship game Saturday night, will submit to TimesUnion Sports Editor. Danny Lee. at the scoring table, his eightplayer all-star team. The two coaches of the teams playing in the final game may submit their all-tourney ballots at the conclusion of the championship game. Local predictions are that if Syracuse wins, its first tourney game, it will meet North Webster in the semi-finals. The YellowJackets in its first game in November. lost to Webster 1 by one. thin point. 44-43. Further predictions are that Syracuse could find themselves playing in the final game Saturday night. Tickets For Boat Show Available At Journal A limited supply of tickets for the 1958 Chicago National Boat Show are available at the Journal office. These free tickets will be given out on a first come, first served basis. Beginning Friday 7 February at the Intematioal Amphitheater. 47nd and Halstead street. Application blanks for Store Licenses also are available. Mrs. Anna belle Coil, branch manager, states that if the application is completed there, tax receipts for 1957 must be shown and there is a fee of fifty cents. - Women's City Bowling foumey Begins 18 Jan. The third annual city tournament of the Syracuse Women’s Bowling Association will begin at the Pickwick bowling lanes 18-19 January. Team events will be played in Syracuse, and singles and doubles are scheduled for the following the week end. 25-26 January, at Ligonier. Syracuse marshals will assist in maintaining orderly entrance to the building and gym in order to avoid undue rushing and jamming at the doors. All games in the tourney will be played on Standard Time and as indicated in the above schedule.
State Driver Examiaer Exteads Hours Here Hours at the Syracuse License Branch thru January and February will be from 8:00 am. until 8 p.m.. Fast Time, six days a week, Mrs. Anna belle Coil, branch manager, has announced. Beginning Monday, the state examiner will serve the branch on Monday mornings from 9:00 until 12:00 Fast Time <8 to 11 Standard or Slow Time). Tie extension of time to threi* full hours was granted the Syracuse branch this week. Mrs. Coil emphasizes again that all operators and chauffeurs licenses can be renewed at any time at the Branch, but that those applying for Beginners and Public Passenger licenses and all persons over 75 years of age applying for drivers license, must go before the State Driver Examiner who is here on Monday mornings. , f - A written examination also is required of applicants for Public Passenger driver licenses. 790 “RTI Plates Sold First Five Days Sale of auto licenses was lively at the Syracuse License Branch during the first fi\p clays in which 1958 plates were available. School tod Plan Subject of PTA Panel Public Invited To January Meeting • A general discussion of the proposed School Board plan will be of primary interest at the next regular meeting of the Turkey Creek Parent-Teachers Association scheduled for 20 January. The public is invited to join the membership to learn moire about the proposed School Board system. Following a recommendation resulting from a recent Advisory Board meeting, a panel discussion on. all phases of the school board -’plan will' be conducted, followed by a question and answer period. The meeting will be held at the school house. Two Entries So For In First Baby Contest Two families have entered the contest for the first baby bom in 1958 in this area. Both babies were bom Friday 3 January. One entry was reported to the Journal office and the other was received at the Pickwick Theatre. So that other eligible parents may enter the contest in accordance with rules published in last week’s Journal, applications will be accepted until noon CDT Saturday 11 January. After that time the winner will be named and will be the applicant whose baby was bom at the earliest time after 12:01 a.m. 1 January as previously stated. Announcement of the winner will be made next week. Local Drug Store Sells Fishing Licenses 1 Hunting and fishing licenses are available at Thornburg-Drug in Syracuse, North Webster and Warsaw, and also at the Frog T>vem on Wawasee Lake. Several other business places in the Syracuse community have applied to the Indiana Department of Conservation for permit to sell these licenses and will be announced as soon as they qualify. Regular resident' license for fishing, hunting and trapping is $2.50. Ladies' license for fishing only is $1.50. The annual non-resident fishing license is $3.50. There is also a 14-day non-resident fishing license available at $2.50. C. E. Beck Aaoouoces Candidacy for Assessor Calvin E. Beck announced this week that he will file as a candidate for County Assessor subject to the vote of the Primary election this spring. Trustee of Turkey Creek Township since 1951. Mr. Beck will complete his second term at the end of this year. TO THE MANY PEOPLE WHO SENT FOOD TO THE KITSONS So many people prepared food which was taken to the home of Mrs. Rebecca Kitson during the days following their recent tragedy. In expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Kitson says that she does not know to whom many of the dishes belong and she would appreciate hearing from the owners so that the dishes can be returned. f
