Rex Slusher, with 17 seconds remaining, gave the Cubs a two point lead, to end the quarter 40 to 38. Fourth quarter play found the Jackets going in leaps and bounds to finally pull into the lead. Syracuse out shot the visitors from the field, but with the skilled foul shooting of Pierceton, under terrific pressure, Cubs again took the lead. Syracuse, now feeling the pressure, racked up six quick fouls with visitors taking advantage of the host’s predicament. Thornburg, still in there fight-
ing, sank two foul shots to end the exciting game with a 55 to 53 score. Bob Swenson led the Yellowjackets with 17 points, while Jim Denton followed with 11. Rex Slusher also bucketed. 17 points for the Cubs. Following close behind with 15 points was McFarren. v . Pierceton’s JaclcJrlorn left the game early in the fourth quarter with five fouls. Second Team Defeats Visiting Pierceton Cubs A close game most of the way found the Yellowjackets pulling out of a tight spot in the final quarter of play to defeat the Pierceton Cubs 38 to 30 Friday night at the local gym. First, second and third quarter play kept fans wondering and fourth quarter play determined the rally as both teams played great basketball to the end. With one minute and 37 seconds remaining of the game, Ronnie Hibschman gave the Jackets a two point lead. Shortly after Harry Alfrey sank two free throws, making the score 36 to 30, thus giving hosts a safe marginal lead. LaMar Kilmer, in last seconds of play, scored a beautiful field goal, giving Syracuse a second victory. Kilmer and Ted Burson tied for high honors with 10 points each. Long of Pierceton scored eight points for the Cubs. Druckamiller and Alfrey each had six points; three each were marked up for Hibschman and Kline; and Bornman had one point. Disher saw action in the last quarter. the first home game Friday night. Only good comments could be heard for the Syracuse Band, directed by James Lentz, as they finished their performance Friday night before game time. Hope to see many more such exhibitions. Drum majorette, Jill Largen. and twirlers, Mary Holloway. Sharon Nordman, Patty Hummel and Jackie Jones, sure looked neat in their new uniforms and big white hats. Jill wears gold, twirlers wear blue. Noticed the beautiful gold snare drums and the bigger matching bass drum for the band. Really adds class! . Quite a crowd of Pierceton Cribs-were present to see their team “Keep that Horse Shoe!” But a cry.was heard from the Jackets’ section, to the contrary, bringing down the roof with “Get that Horse Shoe!” Do you dance? A lot of kids (oldsters too) had a ball doing such at the sock hop held after the game in the old gym. Dick Buscher was master of ceremonies. Pierceton was extended an invitation to attend the big doings. Happy to see so many accepted. Other local communities were well represented too. It seems there were Nappanee, Atwood, Millersburg, Webster, as well as Warsaw, fans present. Host Syracusans had many fans at the sock hop also. With such a crowd attending, noticed how well behaved and well mannered they were. Juniors will handle concessions this year during ballgames at home. A swell selling technique was used at Friday nights’ game for juniors had only candy bars and pop left. Susan Brown and Betty Coy are co-managera of the busy procedure. ■ Thank you, Betty Coy, for your assistance with this column. Miss Coy, a junior this year, is to take over the write ups for this column soon. Syracusans will again be hosts tomorrow night to the Concord Minutemen. Good luck Yellowjackets. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Oehligschlager, now living in LaSalle, Illinois, were here for the week end at their Syracuse Lake home. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Slusser and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Diller and family spent the week end in LaGrange, Illinois, visiting relatives.
