Club Notes (Held Over From Last Week) PYTHIAN SISTERS Seventy-five attended Friendship Night at the local Pythian Temple 1 May. The guest officers took charge of the opening and closing of the meeting. Each guest officer was introduced by the corresponding host officer. Past Chief was Mrs. Ora Mishler of South Bend; Most Excellent Chief, Mrs. Clare Belle Demaree of Warsaw; Excellent Senior, Mrs. Florence Sellon of Mishawaka; Excellent Junior, Mrs. Alice Kissinger of North Webster; Manager, Mrs. Gertrude Tole of South Bend; Secretary, Miss “Nothing deteriorates a car as fast as a neighbor’s buying a new one.”—Changing Times.

Dora Lemon of Cromwell; Treasurer, Mrs. Dorothy Chactian of Mishawaka; P-rotector, Mrs. Jean Jamison of Elkhart; Guard, Mrs. Lida Davis of Akron; and Pianist, Mrs. Grace Hathaway of Warsaw. Mrs. Bernice King, district deputy grand chief of Akron, and Mrs. Alma Meyers, past grand chief of Warsaw, responded with short speeches. Each visiting officer was presented with a gift and each one responded with a thank you speech. During the social hour the temples were entertained with two vocal solos and a vocal duet by Sherry Searfoss and Jayne Searfoss. Judy Kline accompanied at the piano. Mrs. Esther Stoelting rendered several piano solos. The hostesses, Mrs. Nelle Sloan and Mrs. Bertha McPherson, and their assistants served very dainty and delicious refreshments. PAST MATRONS fiLUB Fifteen members of the Syracuse Past Matrons Club enjoyed a May Day breakfast at Louie’s Grill Saturday 4 May. The table was cleverly decorated with a Maypole centerpiece. Ribobns extended to each place and were held there with a corsage. B Following a short business meeting several contests were played with Mrs. Court Slabaugh winning. Mrs. Effie Emerson and Mrs. Mel Rapp were hostesses. FRIENDLY NEIGHBORS CLUB * Twenty-eight members and two children were present for the last meeting of the Friendly Neighbors Club at the Turkey Creek Conseration Club house 1 May at 1:30 p. m. Luncheon tables were appropriately decorated for May Day with white background and May flowers. The main centerpiece was a maypole of artificial daisies and pastel ribbons. Mrs. Gene Storm was chairman and was assisted in serving the delicious luncheon by Mrs. DeLos Martin, Mrs. Charles Rock, Mrs. Raymond Campbell and Mrs. John Zimmerman, Jr. The business meeting followed and was opened by the president, Mrs. Vance Moots. Mrs. Ralph Heyl was auctioneer for the monthly auction held by the club. Mrs. Walter Bell won the sunshine gift. The closing ode ended the business meeting. Bingo was plawed during the remainder of the afternoon with many winners. Mrs. DeLos Smith won the cover-all prize. M. E. CIRCLE NO. 2 Mrs. Eloise Frevert was hostess to Circle No. 2 of the Methodist W.S.C.S. Thursday. The meeting was opened in regular form with the hostess giving devotions. Mrs. Frank Bates presented the lesson by reading the Layman’s View of Religion by Ray D. Everson. She concluded her program by reading the following poem; entitled “Members”: Some are like wheelbarrows, they need to be pushed. Some are like a canoe, they need to be paddled. Some are like a kite if you don’t tie a string on them they fly. Some are like a football, you can’t tell which way they’ll bounce. Some are like a balloon, full of wind and likely to blow up. Some are like trailers, no good unless pulled. Some are 100% attendance and very cooperative. CIRCLE NO. 3 Mrs. Ralph Thornburg, Jr., entertained Circle Three of the Methodist Women’s Society on 2 May with Mrs. Joseph Shewmon as a guest. Members welcomed back from her winter vacation in Panama Mrs. Melville Smith. Devotions were given by Mrs. Ben Crews, who used Easter and Mother’s Day as her theme. President, Mrs. Horace Gottschalk, read several Mother’s Day poems which were very appropriate. A committee of four was appointed to serve for the summer food sale being planned by the entire Women’s Society. Those appointed were Mrs. Ben Crews, Mrs. Robert McClintic, Mrs. Edith-Rhode and Mrs. Clifton Kinder. Mrs. James Ridgeway is general chairman of this project.
