Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Conklin of Fort Wayne, were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Shermon Deaton.
Club Notes WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON CLUB Members of the Wednesday Afternoon Club, meeting on 9 January at the home of Mrs. Elnora Colwell, were treated to a very special surprise, as the tape recorded voice of Mrs. Lou Sprague presented a portion of the program on “Contemporary Poets.” Mrs. Sprague, who is convalescing in the Austin Nursing Home in Goshen, gave a brief biography of the Hoosier poet, Barton Reis Pogue, and then, with great expression, read two of his poems. “When Grandpa Reis Said Grace” and “Post Office Pen." A warm note of thanks was accorded to Mrs. James Kirkwood, through whose efforts the recording was made. Also contributing greatly to the afternoon’s program were Mrs. Court Slabaugh, who presented interesting biographies of a number of well known poets, including Warsaw’s Virginia Scott Miner and Marjorie Felkner Wagner. Also, Mrs. Effie Emerson, who gave the moving life story of Grace Noll Crowell, as well as a few of her poems. Mrs. Stephen Freeman’s account of the life of the beloved Edgar A. Guest and her understanding presentation of several of his best loved poems brought the enjoyable program to a close. Mrs. Lewis Immel, Mrs. Richard Heyde and Mrs. Man* Hoy were elected as a nominating committee during the business meeting. A letter was also read from Mrs. Pete Hilburt, who is vacationing in Florida. Delicious fudge was served by the hostess, Mrs. Colwell, to conclude a pleasant afternoon. The next meeting will bq held at the home of Mrs. Court Slabaugh on 23 January.
