FATHER’S DAY The business of observing Father’s Day will doubtless be handled in a great many ways. For some fathers, it will be just another day. For many, the significance of the day will find expression in' the giving of some gift that will be a source of pleasure to him. For the luckiest of all fathers, the full meaning of the day may find expression in the hands of some youngster who, unconcerned with dollars and cents and armed with a sheet of paper and colored pencil, comes up with a more or less artistic piece of handicraft bearing the words, “My Dad’s My Pal!—Bill” or, “I Love You—Margie.’’ Summer * Schedule OPEN EVENINGS Monday thru Saturday 10 a. m. to 9 p. m. Carousel Is Latest In Cinemascope The latest development in Cinemascope processing may be seen at the Pickwick Theatre Sunday and Monday when “Carousel” is shown in Cinemascope 55. * Since the original Cinemascope movie, “The Robe”, technicians have been experimenting with all sizes of film from 70mm. 65mm to 55mm. The idea was to sharpen the image and increase the illusion of depth beyond the capacities of the orginial technique. Choice finally fell on the 55mm size. It brought all practical information to the screen tha/ could be used. Since movie houses have not been equipped to run the larger film the 55mm prints were reduced to the 35mm size. The result is a more realistic picture on the screen. The theatre manager stated that anyone acquainted with the simplest knowledge of cameras can appreciate the problem involved when it is recalled how fuzzy and indistinct and enlargement can get when a negative is making an enlargement three or four times the original size. Enlargement on the Pickwick screen is approximately 60,000 times the original frame size. PRESERVING BEAUTY John Fischer, editor of Harper’s magazine, has issued a vigorous challenge to all Americans who are concerned about preserving what natural beauty remains in their surroundings. He urges them not merely to bewail the despoilment of trees and grassy areas, but to take up the cudgels and do something about it. ‘‘Chances are,” Fischer writes, “that in your own town, at this very hour, somebody is getting ready to bulldoze away one of the few remaining meadows or patches of woods.” He bitterly attacks the contention that “a strip of greenery-is a luxury the taxpayers will never stand for” and adds with heavy irony, “After all, nobody will ever enjoy it except the taxpayers, and their children, and their grandchildren.” Fischer quotes the late Bernard DeVoto’s description of the environs of many metropolitan centers as ‘‘an uninterrupted eyesore of drive-ins, diners,

Good citizens should concern r themselves about the matter, for their own benefit and for the sake of generations yet unborn.
