FELLOWSHIP CONFERENCE AT OAKWOOD PARK Six student nurses from Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis, Jane Kroh, Shirley Ann Ooley, Sandra Cline, Rosemary McQueen, Nellie McPheeters and Mary Jac Curry, were among those who attended the In-tra-Varsity Christian Fellowship Northern Spring Conference at Oakwood Park last weekend. The purpose of the conference is for Bible study, lectures, and group singing. Approximately one hundred college students from over the state attended this conference. Mermaid Festival To Be Last Week of June The annual Mermaid Festival will be held in North Webster the week of June 25-June 30; and the annual Mermaid Ball will take place Saturday nite, June 23rd at Tippechnoe Gardens on Tippecanoe Lake, it was announced today by John Koontz, President of the North Webster Lions Club, perennial sponsors of these events, which annually hearld the Indiana Lake region resort and vacation season. Growing in stature each year since its inception 11 years ago, the Mermaid Festival attracts upwards of 100,000 visitors to the lake region. Last June pictures of Lake Queen Jackie Blue, presenting a string of freshly caught Indiana blue gills at the White House for the President, appeared in metropolitan- newspapers across the nation. 52 contestants vied for the Mermaid Queen title last year, hailing from such far away places as Kannapolis, North Carolina; Davenport, Iowa; and Oak Park, Illinois. Blonde, 17 year old, blue eyed Barbara Bender of North Manchester was selected queen and will preside over this years festivities. She was entered as Miss North Manchester by the North Manchester Lions Club. Although full time festival preparations won’t begin in North Webster until 1 May, festival secretary, Marge Payne, reports that inquiries nave already been received for the 1956 Queen contest from such distant points as Sturgis, Michigan; Chicago Illinois; University of Kentucky; and Miami, FloridaMrs. Payne reports that 8 bands and early entries in the Mermaid Parade scheduled for Friday evening, 29 June have been received. They are: the 52 member Albany High School band; the 48 member Cowan High School band; the 40 member Jefferson Twp. band of Goshen; the 40 member East Rockcreek School band of Bluffton; the 40 member Syracuse High School band; the 52 member Adams Central High School band of Monroe; the 45 member Waterloo High School band; and the 60 member Fremont High School band.. Contestants interested in entering the ‘‘Queen of Lakes” beauty contest; Cutie contest for boys and girls 4-6 years of age; independent basketball tournament; amateur show; Mermaid Parade; Mermaid golf tournament; Mermaid tennis tournament; should phone or,write to Mermaid Festival Headquarters, North Webster, Indiana.
