The drought, besides burning up crops, kept the fire department busy fighting fires over the week end. The annual ten days assembly of the Evangelical church of Indiana, opened 24 July at Oakwood Park. An unnoticed lighted cigarette folded in with the table linen i and piled in a laundry basket was blamed for the fire at the : Spink Wawasee hotel. Guests on I the Marine Porch noticed the ; light in the dining room and rushed with employees of -the I hotel to grasp water bottles, from tables to help extmgush the flames if necesary. No dam- < age was done to the hotel itself. Two horses were saved, but one was burned alive, in the fire ; which entirely destroyed the ibarn on Pete Johnsons farm. The high wind on Syracuse Lake recently was blamed for causing Glenn Hook s outboard I motor boat to turn turtle. Mr. Hook was able to swim out from i beneath the boat and is none ithe worse for the experience. • A Baltimore & Ohio railroad I ad advertises a Sunday excursion •to Chicago at $2.75. 'ln last week s Journal, the same excursion was advertised at a $4 43 i rate.i Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lilly accom- ■ pamed by Mr. and Mrs J. P.
