Speedboat Explosion Rocks Wawasee North Shore Sunday

By Bill Spurgeon Five Bremen schoolgirls and the driver of the speedboat in which they were riding narrowly escaped serious injury or death Sunday night as the boat exploded while moored at a North Shore pier. We had just finished a hotevening supper of lemonade and potato chips, and were standing in the kitchen door when an explosion much louder than any fireworks rocked our neighborhood. We ran to the front of the house and noticed a speedboat ablaze at the Jack Carr 4>ier« next door to the east. Quickly Extinguished With James Watkins, from Muncie, a guest, we ran to the kitchen, to telephone the fire department and grab our fire extinguishers. At the same time. George Hay, Jr., next door to the Carrs in the other direction and George Haley at the Edward Stephenson residence, were attacking the fire with heavy hand extinguishers and had it out with a carbon dioxide foam from Hadley’s extinguisher within seconds. Burned in the explosion and blaze was Linda Rowe, of Route one Bremen, who received Lead and shoulder bums. Kenneth Gregg, owner and drive of the craft, also of Bremen, was cut about the left eye by something tom loose by the blast. Both were given first aid by Syracuse firemen and later were treated at the office of Dr. Fred Clark. Chain Reaction Cause of the accident was the result of sort of a chain reaction. Gregg had taken the party of Bremen girls, who were beginning a week’s outing at Oakwood Park, for a late evening boat ride. At about eight o'clock, the craft ran out of gas near the North Shore. After drifting in ito the Carr pier* Gregg went with a metal can after five gallons of gasoline, which he poured into the gas tank of the boat. He then placed this can under the motor hatch, without replacing two caps on the can. and closed the hatch. Gas fumes from this can apparently caused the explosion when he tried to start the boat, probably set off by a spark. The front deck and the hatch of the boat were completely blown off as was the windshield, as the force of the explosion was transmitted under the passenger compartments through the bilge to the f<#e part of the craft. One hatch cover was later retrieved by this writer as it floated in to shore Qear the scene of the explosion! The explosion attracted attention from a wide area and a larger crowd was drawn with th|e arrival of firemen. Recently Overhauled Gregg’s boat had just undergone a compile re-upholstenng and motor overhaul job. The boat, a 1940 Chris Craft, was damaged largely by the blast and little by the fire and most dam age was above water. The boat was still afloat as it was towed away late Sunday night. Also passengers with Gregg and the Rowe girl were Marlene Rhoade and Judy Bowser, both of Bremen: Jane Unsicker of Bourbon and Marlyn Stuntz of Plymouth. All attend school at Bremen. Miss Mary Holloway. Miss Jill Largen. Miss Nancy Clark, and Miss Bea Bachman are attending majorette camp this week at the Smith Walbridge Camp.
