Social Side of The Basket Ball Game By Sanara De Gross The gymnasium was holding a good size crowd for the last basketball game of the season Friday night and what a ballgame the fans witnessed. For recent graduating classes it seems like “Old Home Week End” with all the chattering and cheerful greetings held between class mates. Do you readers recall a statement made in last week’s paper concerning Ralph Bushong and his Teddy Bear? Well, Ralph had a few words to exchange with this reporter. ‘‘Well, what do you expect when you can’t afford a girl?" Any one with a suggestion? Did everyone notice the gold hsits with the blue band Syracuse fans were sporting at the game? They will really show up brightly at the tournament over the week end. „ Over heard at the bailgame. Ts my girdle falls, it will be your fault.” Now what could be meant by that, is the question. The seniors held a cake and pie raffle during -the half of the first team game. Delicious looking cakes! Wayne Nickels could be heard well calling off ticket numbers. The band put on quite a performance for the fans. Bea Bachman. in case the audience didn’t know, was doing her solo she performed Saturday l at Indianapolis. The band had a change in (dance steps while they did their varsjbn of a band jive. The same Vang with new steps. Not bad! Some seniors, trying to be brave for their last time for marching felt just a little sad. Over heard from some seniors: "It doesn’t seem possible.”; “It’s all rather sad.”; "Funny, I don’t feel like crying.” However, tears were common in a few of the senior’s eyes, and no wonder; everyone enjoys band. A dance was sponsored by the Student Council after the ball game. An enjoyable time was had by everyone. A free will offering was announced so that the Student Council will have funds to use for future dances. At the dance the basketball players and the coach received quite a welcome. James Hughes can really call those square dances. Mr. Longenecker is a man who likes, to do the slow waltz, no jitterbugging, square dancing, or that fast dancing for him. Paul Pollock wants his name in the paper. Well, heres away for this social side to end.
School News FIRST GRADE NEWS In our .room we are learning what makes a good boy or girl (alas the code of a "Good American”) : 1. Be strong and useful. 2. Do my work or duties. 3. Be honest and tell the truth. 4. Be kind to all people. We have an Honor Train in which our pictures are placed, however if we are not a good boy or girl, our picture must be turned over. We must do good deeds that our face may show. The Red Birds are beginning their farm unit. The Blue Birds are enjoying “Our Friends.” This unit of work takes them to the zoo. The wish to thank Mr. and Mrs Rapp for the lovely tree in our room. We will place birds in this tree as we find they have returned from the South. “Spring” we will certainly welcome you. THE HOOSIER DAY Direct Fr®« the v State Capital By FRAME A. WHITE
After two weeks of dragging its heels, the 89th State legislature has speeded up. It must decide big. and important, issues before final adjournment as fixed by law on March 7. Leaders told me, it is “not too bad” for the law making mill to grind slowly at mid-session. Otherwise, important bills would be brought to the floor, chopped to pieces by amendments, and the eolons would get to quarreling over them. The Hoosier Day stands by its report of general major decisions that have been made by a dozen or so of the assembly men, who in the final say, can beat or pass any of the 1000 bills and resolutions before the session. OVERALL PICTURE NOW SHARPING OUT You may expect these things of your legislature. The record $675 million dollar budget, for the next two years, will be slenderized some by the Senate, but not much. The Governor who comes after George N. Craig will face serious money matters. Cost of state government is rocketing and the contemplated budget will drain the treasury surplus. The well informed State of Commerce is alarmed at the seemingly fatalistic manner in which the budget, undoubtedly a forerunner of a sharp increase in the state tax bill for Indiana citizens, agriculture and industry, has been accepted in the assembly. LEGISLATURE SEES NEED OF MORE PAY The legislators showed a soft spot in their hearts by voting themselves a $lO a day raise in pay. since most of them run in the red as Indianapolis hotels and i restaurants are having a heydeyi with charges. Many home folks come and expect the legislator to feed and wine them. The assemblymen are friendly to giving State Judges a raise of $1,500 a year and one of $1,200 to local judges. With fewer representatives in this session than previously, labor stands a good chance of making ■ gains, since the Governor is championing many of their causes. The legislature is not “reform” minded and bills pertaining to gambling are bottled up’. There are fewer screwball bills in this session. The bill to give 19 year olds the vote, and one to allow home rule by cities and towns, got in trouble in the House after passing the Senate. The public impresson at the 1956 polls as to whether Indiana should have fast or slow time, is advancing. Before getting blood pressure up on the hundreds of bills before the assembly, remember that most of them, fortunately,, will die and not be enacted.
