for the coming year, more than half of it for medical research. “None of these huge commitments for research and patient care or for remodelling Riley Hospital would be possible without the generous gifts which have come to Riley.” Mr. Lesh said. “In making provision fbr better care, we have stretched our resources but we have every confidence that generous men and women, through their gifts and bequests to Riley Hospital, will continue to support many Riley services to children.” Among the grants for the coming year, research studies in the diseases of childhood accounted for $69,680. Major grants in this category were $17,000 for the Communicable Disease Research laboratories at Riley, $12,500 for the Biochemical Research laboratories and $8,500 for the laboratory devoted to research in heart and pulmonary conditions. Largest single grant outside the research field was $25,000 to continue development and services of the Riley Audiology clinic which provides diagnosis and therapy for youngsters with speech and hearing problems. A total of $22,595 was allocated by the Board of Governors from Riley Hospital gift funds to be used during the coming year for new hospital equipment. The board also approved $6.8Q5 to continue the medical social service department at Riley, and $3,000 for the George A. Ball Visiting Professorship in surgery which annualy brings outstanding surgeons to the Indiana University Medical Center and Riley Hospital as visiting professors. * Shakespear used some 24.000 different words in his plays?—and undoubtedly knew many more than that.
