Toll Rood Survey Shows Economic Effects Hiring of Dr. Homer Hoyt of Washington. D C., a nationally recognized economic analyst, to conduct a survey of the effect of toll roads on business conditions in Indiana was announced in Indianapolis today by the Indiana Toll Road Commission. Commission Chairman Dillon Geiger of Bloomington said results of the Hoyt survey will be turned over to the 1955 General Assembly to serve as a guide in the future development of toll roads in this state. Geiger said the survey report also would be available to all communities in the state which may wish to use it. Citing the State Legislative Advisory Commission’s recent request for a postponement of North-South Toll Road plans, Dr. Geiger said the Hoyt survey should helpclarify the actual effect of toll roads on the state's economy. ■ “Our legislative leaders have indicated their desire for more thorough information about toll roads and how the people of i!’itii!Huittniii!iiiiiiutiitJ!iinmiiiiiiiiuuimuniiiiiiii Fill Dirt - Top Soil Dump Truck Work Bulldozing (No Moving Charge) Clearing &: Excavating KREAGER BROS. SYRACUSE-WAWASEE JOURNAL Published each Thursday by the Wawasee Publishing Company. Entered as second class matter at the post office at Syracuse, Indiana. Subscription $2.50 per year by mail. W. W. PAULL, Publisher. Indiana would be affected by them,” Dr. Geiger said. “The Toll Road Commission, therefore, feels that this information can best be obtained by scientific studies rather than resorting to hearsay and speculation.” Dr. Geiger said the Hoyt survey would account the probable economic effects of the EastWest Toll Road which is already under construction across northern Indiana, the proposed NorthSouth Toll Road between Hammond and Indianapolis and a proposed East-West Ton Road 1 across southern Indiana. The Legislative Advisory Commission in a recent meeting with the Toll Road Commission requested that data be assembled immediately on the proposed southern Indiana East-West road. This was in compliance with a resolution adopted by the 1953 General Assembly and authored by former State Representative Robert Menke of Huntingburg. Dr. Hoyt said his survey will include both field studies and examination of data already assembled for the commission on the northern Indiana East-West and the proposed North-South roads. His survey will delve into the effects of toll roads on industrial and land development, real estate values, general business conditions and . other economic factors. The Washington analyst will establish a part time office in the Toll Road Commission quarters on the sixth floor of the Old Trails Building. 309 West Wash- . ington Street. Indianapolis. Recognized as one of the nation’s foremost economic experts. Dr. Hoyt is president of Homer Hoyt Associates of Washington, a firm specializing in business surveys. Since forming'the organization in 1946, Dr. Hoyt conducted surveys for such nationally known firms as the Prudential Insurance Company. Marshall Field and Company of Chicago, Allied Stores (a 70-member department store chain', and the J. L. Hudson Department Store of Detroit. He has conducted more than j 100 surveys for the development 1 and location of shopping centers in most of the major cities. In 1953. Dr. Hoyt surveyed the potential of a proposed neighborhood shopping center in the area I of 10th and West Streets for the * Indianapolis Redevelopment Commission. He recently completed a survey for the development of a 40-acre Village Shopping Center which is being built in Gary by the L. I. Combs and Sons firm. On several previous Indiana projects. Dr. Hoyt has worked through an Indianapolis associate, Paul I. Cripe, designing engineer with offices in the Lemcke Building.
