Ceremonies Inaugurate Toll Road Construction South Bend. Ind., September 22 —Governors George N. Craig of Indiana and Frank J. Lauscht of Ohio reaffirmed their all-out support of toll roads at groundbreaking ceremonies near here yesterday for the $280,000,000 Indiana East-West Toll Road. The groundbreaking was held on the Marguerite Proud farm in Olive Township of St. Joseph County before an estimated crowd of 2,500 spectators. The site is approximately midway between South Bend and LaPorte and at a point where the toll road will cross I the historic old Chicago Trail. route back to Indiana from a medical convention in New York. Third District Congressman Shepard J. Crumpacker and other dignitaries from St. Joseph and LaPorte counties attended the groundbreaking. The first section of road which will be constructed is a 7.4-mile strip in these two counties. The Rieth-Riley Construction Company, Inc. of Goshen and South Bend was awarded the contract for their initial construction. The groundgreaking was preceded by a breakfast for the participating officials from South Bend and Mishawaka at the Hotel Oliver in South Bend.
