Though many nations have devel-i oped their own carols as a part of j their treasury of folk songs, our churches at Christmas have an abundance of special music. The radio Is monopolized by carols. is Atting. When the announcement was first made by the angels to the shepherds, it was accompanied by the sudden appearance of a great heavenly choir. Manyhad responded to the previous visit of the angel with the beautiful Magnificat. ‘‘My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced In God my Saviour.” The aged Simeon greeted the baby Jesus In the temple with another song of praise. Zacharias' “Benedictus." though sung at the birth of John the Baptist. Is perhaps the most beautiful hymn of praise to the Messiah. Looking to that event, he says. ‘‘Whereby the day spring from on high shall visit us. to shine upon , them that sit in darkness and j the shadow of death; to guide our ; feet Into the way of peace ’ Yes. the coming Christmas season Is 'a time full of singing. it is in line with the great principles of life God has shown us. Justice and law should go together All government uses law; but only good government makes just law Above all human laws is the Law of God ‘‘Under God” means not simply that God’s name is used but that his will is really expressed in what the government does and plans. • • • The Governor All good government centers in some kind of executive He may be called Prime Minister, or King, or President The name does not make much difference But there has to be some responsible head somewhere, some person who has the right to make decisions and to order them earned out This is true all the way down from national to village organization A government where it is possible to “pass the buck” all around in a circle without any one person’s being held responsible or having to make a decision, is a bad government Both in the Old Testa ment and m the New. the impor- • tance of the nght man at the center of things is underscored Under a good king like David or Hezekiah, the country prospers; under a bad one like Jeroboam or Manasseh the country goes to pieces Tunes have not changed much. • • • The Governed The ‘great difference between government in the days of Saints Paul and Peter and today.' is that in the English-speaking countries. where free Bible Christianity has had fullest sway, we have democracy as our form of government (This is not forgetting other countries where the same is true, such as Holland It is also not forgetting that m some countries called democratic, there is nothing of democracy but the name > Both Paul and Peter, when they wrote i of kings and other men of author- ; ity. did not picture modern democracy at all. In the Roman Em I pi re the monarch were dictators. 1 they were not elected. In our dem t ocratic world the governed are ! also the governors. Power resides j no longer in the throne or in the palace; it resides in the people where it belongs. Furthermore, in the modem democratic world, j Ci.nstian ideals can make themselves felt as they could not in the palace at Rome or Constan tmople. in centuries gone by.
