American Legion Auxiliary Meets The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall for its regular meeting last week. The yearly reports of all standing committees were given by their chairmen. The membership chairman, Mrs. Harry Coy, reported that the drive for 1954 membership has started. Those women wishing to renew their membership may call Mrs. Bert Cripe or Mrs. Harold Bassett. Also those who are eligible and would like to join may call these ladies for an application blank. Those eligible are those women who are widow’s. wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters of discharged servicemen who are Legionnaires and every woman who loses a son, a husband, a brother, or a father is eligible as a Gold Star member, immediately, whether or not the veteran was ever a member of the Legion. This is a very busy and worthwhile organization and all new members are cordially invited to join us in our work. Mrs. Roy Sarjent, merit chairman. announced that our unit would receive a 109% citation for ouk work in the past year. Mrs. Leonard Nichols announced that the next Second District meeting will be held at Kentland. Sept. 9th. for installation of new district officers. Installation of our new unit officers will take place Sept. 22 at the Legion Hall. The meeting was closed in the usual ceremony and Mrs. Russell Kistler, Mrs. Joe Rapp. Mrs. Fred Dust and Mrs. Fred Dust, Jr., served refreshments. SAILBOAT RACES In the strong, steady breeze that sent the Lightning sailboats twice around a triangular course in record time Bruce Baiden. Kokomo sailor, won first place in the Sunday sailboat race on Lake Wawasee to recapture first place in the summer series. Mrs. Baiden and her father. Joe Plasket, were his crew. Baiden took the lead at the beginning and held it throughout the race. « Second place was won by Dr. John Wellington, Goshen, with has'sons. Jim as skipper, and Bob as second crewman.. Jim Bender of Papakeechie Lake and Syracuse, with Whitey Boerger of Cottingham Beach, Lake Wawasee, and Jim Fields as creiv, finished third just ahead of Paul Penn. Goshen, with sons Paul. The male died at birth, and tiny “Gee Gee”, female, died Sunday night, of a blood clot in her lung. “Tina” was very watchful with the female, standing over her colt from birth, and now whinnies and looks around for her. "Tina” belongs to Cheryl Spry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Spry, and had on a ribbon at the recent Horse Show at Warsaw. “Gee Gee" was 21 inches high and 24 Inches long.
