If a person Is careful, he can improve on his eating habits and when he starts eating normally again, will have little desire for foods which add weight. Losing weight too fast on “starvation diets’’ is dangerous for good health and often the person feeling hungry, irritable and weak. Since rapid reduction of weight does not give the tissues a chance to shrink, a person may become flabby and look older. It may even do damage to the heart. A good safe reducing diet contains all the foods necessary for good health. The “Basic 7”, which was planned by the National Nutrition Council, includes bread, fats, meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals, eggs and milk. one to two pounds a week on 1200 calories a day. On a gaining diet, a person eats additional foods which are high in calories, consuming about 3,000 to 3i500 calories a day. 1 An example of a good menu pattern to lose weight, might be: breakfast, fruit, one or two eggs (not fried), one slice of toast with a little butter, coffee; lunch and dinner, meat (not fried), one or two cooked vegetables with a little fat for seasoning, one raw vegetable, milk and Milk should be served at least twice a day. If desired, a glass of milk may be taken at bedtime. Some days the lunch may be a sandwich and a glass of milk with some fruit, or a bowl of soup with a salad. Simple foods, well prepared and attractively served ars most important for reducing. Rich pastries, gravies, sauce desserts, soft drinks and eating between meals are inviting, but too often they are responsible for excessive weight.
