ARREST AT LIGONIER CLEARS UP LOCAL BREAK-INS An arrest Wednesday at Ligo-. nier by State Detective Dave Mil-' bourn. Sheriff Cripe of Elkhart , county and Noble county police officers cleared up a series of break-ins here at Syracuse, committed early this year. Leroy Stutsman. Jr., 18, was arrested, together with a 18-year-old accomplice. The break-ins here were at the Pure Oil station, Sam Swedaraky's yard and at the Syracuse high school building. The articles taken included an air rifle and merchandise at the Pure Oil station. a fuel pump at the Swedarsky building. Nothing was taken at the high school, although an attempt was made to break into the office safe. The articles have, I been recovered. ! ' The boys were caught at Ligonier, in connection with thefts in Elkhart county. BROKE PROBATION RILES; SENT TO STATE FARM Warren B. Frazier, 18. was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in the Indiana State Farm prison by Judge Walter Brubaker, In circuit court. He was to be taken to the state farm Friday. The sentence was on a charge* lof second degree burglary Jan. 27. 1952, when Frazier broke into I the Pickwick Lounge & Grill here and stole 4 cartons of cigarettes. 3 cases of beer, and parts of five bottles of whiskey which were on the bar. At the time of his arrest, he was placed on probation, but according to testimony he has been breaking probationary rules repeatedly, and last Friday was arrested by State Detective Milbourne and Deputy Sheriff Joe ! Bauer. — INTERMEDIATE MOTHER'S CLUB The Intermediate Mother’s club met Monday evening in the home of Mrs. Paul Lantz, with Mrs. Maurice I&ns and Mrs. Stanley Peters assisting hostesses. < Mrs. Leo Kowallik read a paper on "Questions We Should Ask the Teachers About Our Children When We Visit School.” This was followed by the group asking questions and Mrs. Kowallik and Mrs. . Peters answering them. Mrs. Robert Searfoss won the door prize and Mrs. Eugene Yo-, der won the sunshine plant. The hostesses served refreshments buffet style. START WORK TO DRILL NEW WELL ] The Lane-Northern Co., of Mishawaka, has moved in equipment here at the site of the new pumping station and storage tank 'and will start drilling a well, to {supply additional water for the Syracuse Water Co. The site is ’on town property deeded to the I town by the Weatherhead Co. The 1 well will be a 12-in. driven pipe. They expect to strike a good vein at from 80 to 100 feet. Drilling is expected to take less than JO days. A 500-gal. per minute electric pump will be placed on the new well, and water pumped directly into the water mains, only 12 feet from the w.ell. The well and pump will cost >4200.00. The Weatherhead Co. used a ' total of 5.900,0*0 gallons of water during February, The emergency electric pump at the fire station and the two water pumps are , keeping water pressure up to a satisfactory figure, according to' Janies Gilbert, town employee. C ARTISAN'S CLUB Mrs. Merl Smith was hostess to the Artisan's Tuesday evening. March 3. The Club was very fortunate in having Mr. H. Milton Crooke, the band director and assistant principal of Bourbon high school, whose hobby is leather tooling, to instruct us on our project for the evening. Mr. Crooke brought several lovely hand bags, belts and pictures along to show what the experienced tooled can. accomplish. He explained the different grades of leather and the tools used for the various designs. The members were then in- , structed on how to make their i selected article which for a beginner should be simple. Coin purses, watch bands, belts and coasters were made. Mr. Crooke will be present at I our next meeting to give a more ■ advanced lesson. This is planned to be with Mrs. Willard Gustaf-1 son. . Mrs. Woodrow Robertson became a member of the club. ROTARY CLUB HEARS ROSCOE HOWARD TELL WESTERN “YARNS” Roscoe Howard entertained the members of the Syracuse-Wawa-see Rotary club Monday night with some yarns (he claimed they were true) of a year spent by him some 30 years ago in the harvest field of North Dakota and Canada. True or not. the members enjoyed the half-hour’s talk on Coyotes, locomotives, the western way of doing things, and hardships of an Indiana boy "out on his own" for the first time. FINISH SCOUT CABIN Several men were at the Scout cabin Tuesday night to finish up the carpentry work, in both the boys and girls sides. Those assisting Scoutmaster Stanley Peters were Harold and Duane Kline, Ray Buhrt. Maurice Lung. James Searfoss. Harry Nicolai. Jerry and Ronald Thornburg. A group of local painters have volunteered to giye the interior a double coat of* varnish in the near future. Birthday Party Mrs. C. C. Mulholland entertained at a spaghetti supper Thursday evening. Feb. 26, in honor of her daughter Carolyn who celebrated* her 17th birthday. Later the group attended the theatre. The guest of honor received many lovely gifts.
