Glen Knisley, stationed at Camp Atterbury, spent last week-end in their homes here. Vary Grassy, Legumes For Year-Round Pasture Hoosier farmers can have almost year-round grazing for their cattle if they observe a few of the right practices. Dr. Grant Richardson. Purdue University agronomist, says that early spring growth at low temperatures is possible by seeding orchard grass and Ladino clover or by pasturing small grain seedings. Applying nitrogen on regular pastures in the fall, but not grazing the fall growth down, also provides early spring grazing. For summer grazing. Richardson states that heat- and drgfithtolerant mixtures are needed. Alfalfa and bromegrass, with possibly timothy, will help do the job of providing cattle a full feed in summer. Farmers wanting late fall grazing should learn to depend on the till fescues. Kentucky 31 or alta are examples. Applying nitrogen in the fall boosts the growth of these grasses so that they will produce a seed crop next year. Fescue .seed will help pay the freight on higher rates of fertilization. too, Richardson observes, and fits in well with a fall grazing program. Fescue can also be grazed early in the spring. j Not to be overlooked is the | practice of seeding small grain—wheat or rye — into permanent pasture. The grain will thrive under proper fertilization, providing cow feed, while the sod afford's firm footing underneath. The trick here is to obtain enough penetration of the disks or hoes on the grain drill so that small grain seed will be covered. Wet areas on the proposed pasture site can grow pasture grass, too. Richardson points out. Seedings of Reed canary grass with alsike clover will usually solve the problem. LEAFHOPPERS DAMAGE ALFALFA HAY QUALITY Purdue University entomologists have found that farmers I may increase the quality of alfalfa hay by controlling insects. M. Curtis Wilson, research entomologist in charge of the project, blames the potato leafhopper for being one of the major causes for the reduced alfalfa stands. A serious pest in July and August. this insect causes winter killing by weakening the plants so that they are unable to store I enough food reserves in the roots ■ for survival. Furthermore, the ; potato leafhopper affects the qual- ■ ity of alfalfa by causing a reduction in protein. In test plots last summer at i the Sand- Field Experimental, , Faria near Culver, untreated al-1 , salsa was yellow, stunted, and dry. It was hardly worth cutting except for straw. In adjacent plots treated to control the potato leafhopper, alfalfa plants were 1 tall and dark green with big. t healthy purple flowers. I Wilson’s experiments showed , that the potato leafhopper can be cantrolfed on alfalfa with methi oxychlor for as little as 32.50 to 33.50 per acre, depending on whether the farmer does the job himself or contracts with a cus- ; tom sprayer. There is a distinct advantage to using methoxychlor since it is a chemical which can be used without toxic residues oa the crop. Wilson explains. In County Jail Thomas Hann. 22 of Syracuse, was lodged In the Kosciusko county jail Tuesday for alleged parole violation. The arrest was made by Deputy Sheriff Joe Bauer on authority of the district parole . officer.

(41-ts) Proper Operation Aids Chopper, Baler Efficiency Don Burrough. Purdue University agricultural engineer, offers some hints on how to get the most out of hay balers and choppers during the coming season. First, he says to forget about picking all the hay off the ground, especially on farms where they are a few rocks scattered over the fields. If a rock enters the machine and doesn’t break any parts, it will require a time-out for sharpening the knives. Another point is to hold down ' the speed of the machine. When operating the balers, it is best to keep the density of the bales down within workable limits. Too tight a bale wears the baler and may even wreck it or damage the tractor. It is best to begin cutting grass silage after the dew is off. This will help avoid the excess moisture in the silage. Finally. Burrough adds that common outdoor grain elevators have been found to elevate grass silage at” less cost than for blowers when elevators can be used. Vegetable and fniit storage should be checked at least every week during the winter months, advise horticulturists at Purdue University. Shriveling is caused by lack of in the room. If potatoes or carrots sprout, the temperature is too high.
