TIMELY TOPICS By Mrs. Ruth R. SneUenbereer Home Demonstration Agent When talking with Mrs. Loren Tridle of Mentone recently about losing weight, we were discussing the practice of many homemakers of frequently eating the small portions of food left in serving dishes at the end of the meal or of eating something that a child had left on his plate. Os this Mrs. Tridle said “I decided the food should go to W-A-S-T-E rather than to my W-A-I-S-T.” I think that is a good slogan for other homemakers to think about who are interested in losing or in maintaining their weight. Os course, it could also be a challenge to prepare and serve only what will be eaten or what might be used in left-over preparations. By the way, Mrs. Tridle stated she felt that the will to refrain from certain foods rested with the individual. Whenever a person becomes dissatisfied enough—her photographs portray her larger than she wants to appear, or she’s not able to wear the style dress she’d like to wear and look well in, or she realizes that her health is being interfered with .... then only she can develop the will power to lose. Yofi know, these remarks are not limited to women. Even one of the comic strips portray’s a man’s problems in trying to lose! During this month of February, in which the birthdays of both Washington and Lincoln are observed, it would. be well if each of us could read about and think about the principles which they defended in serving our country. One aspect which impresses me, and I hope you will all agree that it is important, is that both Presidents were outspoken on the dependence of our people, collectively and individually, on Almighty God. Both professed and practiced belief in God. If our nation now is to grow and be secure I think more people need to profess and practice belief in God. Have you your gardening plans made? Not yet, you say? Time is at hand when you need to know what varieties to plant, depending on what preservation processes you expect to use, if any. Some varieties of peas, for example, are better for freezing than others. The same can be said of corn varieties. There is an Extension Bulletin on Vegetable Varieties for Indiana Plantings available for the asking from the county extension office. Then too, here’s a chance to make an early announcement of the Landscape and Garden School to 4>e held all day on March 6th, Details will be given elsewhere later, but if you have particular questions on gardening, W. B. “Pappy” Ward, garden specialist from Purdue, will be there to answer them on that date. Value Os Poultry Increases $1 Million In Five Years The value of poultry and poultry products sold in Kosciusko county, increased from $3,008,489 to $4,188,3*60 between 1944 and 1949, according to 1950 U. S. census of agriculture figures recently received by the Purdue University Extension Service. Os the 2,783 farms of all types in the county in 11950, 405 were classed as poultry farms. Value of poultry and poultry products for Indiana as a whole increased 20.4 per cent between ■1945 and 1949. Total value of the poultry industry in the state for 1951 was estimated by Dr. J. Holmes Martin, Purdue Poultry Chief, at about $170,000,000. In Kosciusko County, 1,640 farms reported sales of 830,245 chickens worth $924,799 in 1949. This included many farms where poultry is not the main source of income and therefore the farm is not classified as a. “poultry farm.” - I A total of 7,307,758 dozen market eggs were sold in 1949 by 1,873 farmers in the county. The eggs brought County farmers raised turkeys in 1949, as compared to 4,231 turkeys in 1944.

Read The Seed Tag Before Ordering Lafayette, Feb. 17. — Read the seed tag before buying, not when the seed is delivered, Dr. F. W. Quackenbush, state seed commissioner at Purdue University, says. Dr. Quackenbush points out that the Indiana farmer who purchases seed from sources outside of Indiana usually does not know what he has bought until it ar-rives—-a good reason for buying tagged seed from his local dealer. The Purclue man cautions that if such seed is bought it must meet interstate commerce restrictions and carry a seed tag, the Indiana tag or a similar tag. But contents of each seed lot vary and the buyer still sees neither the seed nor the tag until delivery. This advice i s particularly timely as oats should not be bought blindly this year. At the state seed testing laboratory at Purdue, tests are showing that about 15 per cent of the oats samples submitted’ are unfit for seeding even though only the better lots are sent in for testing. Such seed has less than 60 per cent germination. Practically all oats we re combined last summer when the season was quite wet, says Dr. Quackenbush. While there was some concern earlier whether soybean seed

would be fit for seeding, tests are showing that most lots are fairly satisfactory. Quckenbush says get germination tests on home grown oats and soybean seed this year. Good Pasture Is Necessary For Livestock A good pasture system is one of the secrets of economical livestock gains. As long as livestock can feed themselves on a green, succulent pasture, they will not need to be fed large amounts of costly grains and supplements. How to establish and maintain a green, succulent pasture with a high livestock carrying capacity has been discussed in a recent leaflet prepared by the Purdue University agronomy department. In this leaflet, entitled “Your Key To Good Pastures,” (Extension Leaflet 244), extension pasture specialists explain the latest permanent and supplementary pasture recommendations. These specialists suggest that the old permanent pasture be re-

novated by thoroughly disking the poor sod and seeding it with a grass legume mixture. The soil should be tested and heavy fertilizer lime applications should be made as needed. In addition, four or five tons of manure should be spread per acre over the entire pasture to give it an extra boost. It is suggested that a bag of superphosphate be spread with each load of manure. Copies of the leaflet are available at the local county agent's office or from the Agricultural Publications Office, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. Prehistoric Paintings In the remote, little visited areas of Southeastern Utah and Northern Arizona, the country is dotted with ruins left by a vanished, prehistoric people. The ruins possibly date back three thousand years. Evidences of the use of color by these people are numerous and consist largely of bits of colored pottery and pictographs on the walls of caves and cliffs. These pictographs are primitive paintings in black, mineral reds and browns.
