DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Do you ex-students remember the incident which took place in 192'2? That was the year the big carnival was held at the grade school to raise money to buy a movie projector. After the expenses of repairing the grade school, which was raised by the carnival, there was enough left over to buy a silent Zenith projector. It was a 35 millimeter projector. In 1936 the changing styles led us to buy a 16 millimeter silent Bell-Howell machine. With further changes in 194*2 we purchased a Victor 16 milli-
meter with sound which we have used until February 11 this year. Now we have the latest style; it is an Ampro with a thousand watt bulb and its 29 pounds is considerably lighter than the old one which weighed 4'5 pounds. — Dolores Druckamil|er, Charlotte Nolan, find Robert Nicolai. SPEAK-EASIES NEWS Several weeks ago Mrs. Petrie, the speech instructor at Warsaw High School, contacted the Syracuse Speak-Easies concerning the discussions held weekly over WRSW in Warsaw. We were asked if we would like to participate. Naturally we all like to discuss so we accepted the offer. The only topic they could offer us at the time was, “Is the United Nations A Success?” Patricia Kitson, Roger Coil, Audrey Hamman, and Philip Nine as alternate were finally chosen. The Warsaw students were Joan Reed, Russell Poor, Douglas Whitesell, and Jim Armington as moderator: Each were assigned one of the-six organs of the United Nations and were prepared to tell the duties of each. After that? Well .... At 7:00 p.m. we wefit on the air. After introducing us and we had explained the organs, the discussion began. This was at 7:l'o'. Mr. Immel sat holding his breath because he thought we would not be able to fill the remaining twenty minutes. He had faith in us but after all, this was fairly new. Miss Hamman was sitting quite calm (almost too calm) and was twisting her hands. Miss Williams seemed quite at ease but if you looked at her eyes you could see a faint semblance of fear. Philip Nine got ‘‘red in the face”, the least bit excited, and Audrey Hamman’s hands were cold. At around 7:25 we began to speed up our discussion because we had so much to say. At 7:30 ! we were stiH going strong and thanks to

WRSW for giving us that extra minute or so. You see, folks, we ran out of time and enjoyed ourselves so much that we weren’t ready to stop. It was so good for us and we really enjoyed it. If, you listened to it you can’t help but know it. Thanks to the Warsaw Speech Organization and WRSW’ for allowing us the privilege to appear on the Junior Town Hall discussion. And did we ever discuss! — Audrey Hamman. FEATURE STORY In case of an emergency, could you give “First Aid”? No, not first to finish the victim — first to aid the victim! Did you know that one person in fourteen receives injuries each year? And that one out of one hundred of these die? And that only one out of fourteen go to a doctor? Accidents can be prevented. But after they happen much can be done. For example: After an automobile accident, people rush to the scene. They gather excitedly around the injured in order to give aid to them. Usually they try to move the victims, get them, and end by helping to kill them. Why? Because there are only a few people trained for such emergencies. The other people are merely adding to the confusion. Why don’t more people see that they have the know how when it comes to caring for those who have received injuries? A film was shown to the high school assembly Monday. This was originally intended for the home economics classes since they are studying first aid. It shows just how one with the know how can care for persons with burns, cuts in arteries and veins, shock, and abrasions. Not only that but what not to do! Such as moving accident victims and so forth. First Aid is not something one can explain in a few paragraphs or even pages. You should take it upon yourselves to know what to do in case you come face to face with an EMERGENCY. Your child is choking! Your husband or wife has fallen and broken his or her leg! A car crashed into your home and injures the driver! A rattlesnake bites your next door neighbor! The beautician burns you with her instruments! On and on.’ Your library has books on First Aid and most communities offer courses. It’s up to you! And find out NOW how to care for injured. You might save your own life! Is it worth -RF That is: TO KNOW FIRST AID. — Audrey Hamman.
