New Horizons With Books; Book Week - Nov. 11-17 “True stature is the challenge of our day, and a measure of it can be found in the lives of those who left their impress on the world,” says Elizabeth Yates, author of “Amos Fortune, Free Man,” which was described as the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Children like to read about real people, animal tales, books about life in other lands, as these stories answer a child’s 'persistent questions as to whether it really happened. But how to guide children toward zestful reading of the lives of great men and women? Making books available - on the table at home or the library shelf - is one way. A young person’s natural curosity will do the rest.' One of the most striking characters of modern books for children is their beauty. Author, illustrator, designer, and printer - all combine their talents to produce an abundance of attractive, colorful books for youngsters of every age and taste. Who of us knows from which book a child will derive sustenance or pleasure, which after all is sustanence, too? So let the child see all the pictures in all the galleries of books. Those he claims for himself he will always remember. Our Syracuse librarian, Miss Ethel Bowser, is most patient and willing in her efforts to guide children towards making their selections. The library will observe book week. Contributed by Mrs. Paul Warner. The Methodist Church at North Webster is having a Turkey Supper on Thursday, Nov. 15th at the Church. Supper will be served from 5 to 8 p. m. Tickets are $1.25 for adults and 60c for children. There will be a Bazaar and “Parcel Post” sale also. CARD OF THANKS Words cannot express our thanks and appreciation for the many cards, floral offerings, kindnesses, etc., extended during the illness and death of our loved one. LOWER WELFARE COSTS Indiana’s determination to open its welfare rolls to reasonable public inspection, plus the highest rate of employment in the state’s history, is cutting welfare costs materially. The Indiana State Department of Public Welfare shows in its official publication that old age assistance has decreased 8.9 percent despite an increase of 25 percent in the number of persons old enough to qualify. Aid to dependent children declined 17.2 percent, altho the number of children’under 18 years of age increased an estimated 20 percent. In August, 1950, old-age assistance beneficiaries numbered 52,421, but this total was reduced to 47,756 in August 1951, and continues to decrease. The fact that Indiana has 1,-3-03,000 persons gainfully employed, not counting farm workers, has something to do with the reduction of assistance from public funds. Crackdowns on runaway fathers is another factor. Observers, however, believe that the opening of the rolls to inspection has been the chief reason Why hundreds of recipients have decided to support themselves. Even before the first of these lists has been made available to the taxpayers, the prospect of publicity is making drastic reductions in welfare costs. GIRL SCOUTS ATTENTION The Boy Scouts are having a party for the Senior Girl Scouts on Saturday, November 10th. It will start at 7:30 p. m. and will be chaperoned. Girls, bring any new prospective members with you. BROWNIE TROOP MEETING The Brownie Troop will meet next Tuesday evening, November 13th, at the home of Mrs. James Bender.
