Darr Wins! New Paris Main Event Gene Darr, of Goshen, starting on the tail end of a twentycar feature, skimmed over the sleek New Paris Speedway course in near-record time to win the 25-lap feature race in which he was forced to dodge in and out of spinning, careening traffic. Chuck McKibbln, the Syracuse star, whose aim was to make it a fouth straight victory, was forced to retire to the pits after the first heat race due to car difficulties. surface of the asphalt track, caused a condensation in which beads of moisture formed, making the track surface very slippery. Also the crashes and bursting water hoses added to the hazard. About third way of the feature, Lenny Judy in car 15, and Phil Waldo in 19, locked bumpers and swung sideways in the west turn directly in front of the roaring speedsters. They were clipped by a half dozen cars, with Smith getting the worst of it. Art Johnson in 431 set a new track record for the 6 lap distance in 1:51:50, bettering the old one held by Darr by .40 seconds. A spectacular crash occurred in this rrce between Darr, Burstfleld and Gale Smith, the 3 cars crashing on the first turn and
sliding almost to the outer wall, but all escaped Injury. The fourth 10-lap heat race saw plenty of action with LeMaster and Monk Bauman providing the excitement for the main' stretch fans. Both cars spun and crashed with parts flying in all directions. Red Harris on the ner* lap blew a tire, hitting the Second turn wall. Promotor Joe Hamsher has announced there will be two more nights of Sunday racing, then will open with the season’s biggest event, a 200-lap race on Sunday afternoon, October 7. This will be the big factor in determining the 1951 champion. Forty cars are expected to start this event. Mrs. Estelle Swartz and Mrs. Gertrude Metzler attended the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Leatherman in Elkhart, Sunday. * WCTUMEETS County Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held Wednesday forenoon and afternoon in the Methodist church at North Webster. During the business session, officers for 1951-52 elected were: Mesdames C. E. Gallaton, Winona, president, Gerald Overholt, 'Winona, vicepresident, corres. secy, Lulu Snellenberger, Warsaw; treasurer, S. A. Bauer, Syracuse, rec. secy, Joe Barrett, Oswego. A special number w r as presented by each local in afternoon session including a vocal solo by Mrs. Leander Yoder, playlett by L. T. L. girls from North Webster, echoes from National Convention by Mrs. Overholt, reading given by Mrs. L. C. Holderman, Oswego, and a pep talk by Miss Miriam Kutz of Warsaw. Members from here attending included Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Bailey, Mrs. Fenstermacher, Lydia Darr, Lydia Deardorff, Adah Clayton, Aurah Druckamiller, Lena Bauer, Bonnie Johnson and son Dan.

10 Drivers To Receive Championship Trophies Ten drivers of the Northern Stock Car Racing Association will receive season championship trophies at the Fairgrounds Speedway, Goshen, next Sunday, September 23rd. At present, Guy Smith of Berrein Springs, Mich., is leading for the class A championship, and Ned Bloom of Elkhart, is ahead for class B. Four other drivers in each division will get smaller awards. Time trials will start at 7:15 p. m. and the first heat race at 8:30 p.m. the remainder of the season at Goshen, racing to continue on Sundays through October. Cause of Smog Damage Major smog components responsible for damage to vegetable crops in the Los Angeles area have been determined to be unsaturated hydrocarbons, main source of which is petroleum. $1400.00 ACCIDENT An automobile accident causing $1,400 damage occured in the early morning hours of Sept. 11, when a Cadillac car driven by Marsha Ivy, Syracuse, and owned by Charles Steward, of Bremen, struck the parked 1949 Dodge belonging to Gordon Mock. The accident occured near the Mock home here in Syracuse. Frank L. Hoover, of Rennselaer, was hurt in the accident and later taken to the Goshen hospital where it was reported he had a broken neck. damage to the Mock car was near $200.00 and $1200.00 to the Cadillac. Mr. Steward had loaned his car to Hoover with the stipulation “take good care of it”. Miss Ivy was treated at the' office of a local physician, where seven stitches were taken in her nose and Up.
