WAWASEELAKE SOUTH SHORE — At the South Shore Inn vacation time is on— conventions are over until about September, and the hotel is full of vacationers. This week, the directors of the state hotel association, are meeting at the South Shore. Bryan Carr, manager of the Claypool hotel, Indianapolis, is the association’s president, and Frank Pope, is secretary. There was also a group from Fort Wayne. The association met at a luncheon to plan for next year’s convention. NEAR WACO — Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bornman “have been adopted” by twin babies, Dan Andrew, and Nancy Ann, who are two months old this Thursday. They have an ideal home to receive their “airing”, and “sunning”, and are progressing nicely. Frank gets home week-ends, beside one vacation week, so far. " Recent company was Mr. and Mrs. Warren Simison, Sally and Jerry, of Chicago. This week’s guests were Mr. and Mrs. Al Helbig, and Mary Pat, of Lemont, 111. OGDEN ISLAND — Robert Whaley underwent major surgery Saturday noon, at Goshen hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday. Mr. Whaley will be there several days yet. The operation was successful, and he is doing nicely, but must remain for rest. Mrs. Whaley is in close attendance. Mrs. Sol Hennock has her sister Mrs. N. Wiener, of Nashville, Tenn., as a visitor a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Hennock always wintered in California, and summered at Wawasee. Mr. Hennock, formerly of Ligonier, died while in the west, in the month of March and was burled in Nashville. Mrs. Hennock is from Nashville and her busband was born in the state of Missouri. KALE ISLAND — Mr. and Mrs. Jap Jones were hosts over the week-end to their daughter (Josephine) Mrs. John Brooks and Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Carr, their daughters, Sherry and Diana ana daughter, Paula, and friend, of Indianapolis. Mr. Brooks brought his family but had to return to the city. Ellis B. Eby & Son of Syracuse. Indiana, have been elected to membership in the American Ab-erdeen-Angus Breeders’ Association at Chicago, announces Secretary Frank Richards. Mr. Eby & Son were among the thirteen purebred Aberdeen-Angus breeders elected from Indiana during the past month to membership in ( the organization. ( 1 - I

F., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem F. Lisor, of Kale Island, Lake Wawasee, has graduated from the Dental Technicians School at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111. Pfc. Lisor is spending a ten-day leave with his parents, at Lake Wawasee. Pfc. Jean Dahl, stationed at Ft. Sheridan, 111., spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Dahl. WITH THE SIXTH FLEET — Marine Private First Class Alfred L. Place, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reed R. Place of Rural Route, Syracuse, Ind., is currently serving with the Sixth Fleet infthe Mediterranean Area. Pfc. Place, a member of the First Battalion, Eighth Marines, (Reinforced), arrived at Glbralter on the first leg of the “Good Will” tour which will include visits to such picturesque countries as France, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Egypt, and the wondrous islands of Crete, Cyprus and Malta. Since the first cruise, initiated by the Second Battalion, Second Marines in January, 1948, nearly all units of the famed Second Marine Division, Fleet Marine • Force, based at Camp Lejeune, N.. C., have made the interesting and colorful voyage. The frequent rotation of all units in the Division andl jpve all plete amphibious training of all uits in the Division and give all Marines equal opportunity to see the pastoral scenes and peoples of Europe and Africa. More than 1600 NROTC Midshipmen from 52 colleges and universities throughout the United States are currently undergoing amphibious training both ashore and afloat. The ashore training is being conducted at the U. S. Naval Amphibious base. Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia, and the afloat! instruction is taking place in | ships »nd craft of the amphibious; - force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. Among those receiving this training under the Naval Reserve Officer Training program is the NROTC Midshipmen unit from Purdue. Brent Bushong of RR No. 3, Syracuse, Ind., boards an LSM (Landing Ship Medium) while on a conducted tour of the Amphibious Base at Little Creek, Va. Bushong is a student at Purdue. MAXWELL AF BASE, Ala., July 10. — Captain John W. Kreitz, of Syracuse, Ind., is presently attending the Academic Instructor Course here it was annouced by Colonel Leslie G. Pvt. Eugene Druckamiller son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Druckamiller has been transferred from Camp Roberts, Calif to Fort Bliss, Tex. His wife Betty, who resides with her parents in Goshen, expects to leave, for Texas, in a few days, to I be near her husband. OTIS AIR FORCE BASE, July 16 — Gerald W. Bitner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bitner, of Syracuse, Indiana, has been promoted to the grade of private,) First Class in the United States Air Force, it was announced here today. He is assigned to the 33D Motor Vehicle Squadron of the 33D Fighter-Interceptor Wing of Otis Air Force Base, Falmouth, Mass. Private First Class Bitner enlisted in the Air Force at Indianapolis, Indiana, on January 3 of the present year. Following his basic training period, he was assigned to his present unit, the 33D Motor Vehicle Squadron, with which excellent performance of dally duties has resulted in his well-merited promotion. The airman is a graduate of the Syracuse High School, Class of 1949. He participated in track and in basketball at that school. SYRACUSE LAKE Betty Essig arrived at the coti tage of Mrs. Eleanor Grayson for the summer. Mrs. Grayson’s mother, Mrs. A. Essig is here also for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Art McCann, of Southgate, Ky., stayed at the Jul- ’ ier-Deardorff Cabin, while vlsit--1 ing the Samuel Larson family. Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher, Gary and Linda, (Vivian was at 4-H camp) went to Michigan City, Sunday for a day at the beach, and to visit the zoo. They were accompanied by the Wayne Bucher family, the Leo Anglin family, and the Willard Conns and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Porter are house guests of Mrs. Blanche Lutes (Keith’s grandmother) and Mrs. Mary Holloway. The Porters are from Las Vegas, N. M., and Mr. Porter just received his degree from Reno University, in Electronic Engineering. He was j selected by the General Electric i Co., at Syracuse, N. Y., in the capacity of Electronic Engineer, and with Mrs. Porter will go there in August to take up his duties. With several relatives, including i Mrs. John Fisher, Mrs. John Hol-| loway, and Mrs. Mary Holloway here, thqgPorters will have an enjoyable time in Syracuse, Ind., before going to Syracuse, N. Y. ! PAPAKEECHIE LAKE 1 The Friendly Neighbors club met on Thursday of last week, as ' it was over due to the 4th of ’ July festivities. Twenty-nine members met at the Turkey Creek Conservation Clubhouse, and two guests, Mrs. Ida Gawthrop, and Mrs. L, Mannering, the latter joining the club. The meeting was conducted by the President, Mrs. I Harry Burson. New business brought up, was money making projects, with a good idea of Mrs. Katharine Bailey, who showed a sample of lovely trays. A picnic for the August meeting, was decided on, and it will be held at Syracuse Lake Park. Several committees were announced, Mrs. William Stocker, chairman for refreshments, Mrs. Gene Henning, for entertainment assisted by various members. The meeting was ended with the club’s closing verse, and turned over to the social committee, Mrs. George Mormon,

Mrs. Sam Larson returned Tuesday from Osceola where she was called Sunday by illness of her mother, Mrs. Faye Elliott. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Abts and children, Bruce and Susan of Kokomo. are spending two weeks with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt C. Abts. Mrs. Chris Rink and her new baby girl spent last Teusday afternoon with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rasor.
