compensation insurance. A 13% reduction in the present rate level has just been announced by Insurance Commissioner Frank J. Viehmann, effective July 1, 1950. The decision to reduce rates was made following a meeting between Commissioner Viehmann and the Indiana Workmen’s Compensation Rating Bureau. The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce participated. There has been a gradual reduction in compensation insurance rates over the past several years. Rates have gone down approximately 57% since 1935. Durthe same period benefits to injured employees have been materially increased. The maximum benefits are now $23.10' per week. Rate-making procedure is highly complicated. However, it works something like this. All insurance companies writing workmen’s compensation insurance in Indiana must be members of the Indiana Workmen’s Compensation Rating Bureau. The Bureau collects statistics upon which estimates can be made of losses during the year. The Rating Bureau
submits to the Insurance Qommissioner a n estimated premium which will , be required to pay losses and expenses, and a recommended rate sufficient to collect the required amount of premium. Since the Indiana Rating Bureau does not have complete statistical information, the National Council on Compensation Insurance actually compiles the information for the Rating Bureaus of the various states. The rate recommended by the Bureau must be approved by the Insurance Commissioner. A number of factors have contributed to this gradual rate reduction in Indiana. Better safety methods, resulting in decreased accident, are one of the principal factors. Increased wages have also contributed to rate reductions as well as the increase in volume of business done by insurance companies. However, since rates are based on losses, better safety records actually pay off in lower rates to employers. Another important factor has been the alertness of the Insurance Commisioner and the Division of Labor. Headquarters for a Statewide Governor’s Safety Conference is in the State Chamber offices. This Conference will be held at the Murat Temple, Indianapolis, on September 14 and 15, 1950. It is headed by Co-chairmen Fred G. Yelton, Safety Director, DelcoRemyD iv i s i on > GMC, Anderson, and R. C. Olson, Assistant Labor Commissioner of Indaina. Committees have been busy for several weeks preparing for what will probably be the most helpful Statewide Safety Conference ever held in Indiana. This Conference will concern itself with all forms of safety. It is hoped that out of it will come Suggestions which will further improve safety records in Indiana and lead to further incurance rate reductions. Details on the conference will be coming along shortly. W. R. C. MEETS The W. R. C. held their regular meeting, Friday evening in the hall with Mrs. Orley Brown and Mrs. Clarence Snyder, as hostesses. Mrs. Verla Nicolai was initiated. « The next meeting will be held August 4, ETTER WANTS TO SEE YOU About Two good buys in homes. In Syracuse proper — shown by appointments. TEEN-AGERS GOSSIP Mary Lou Denzel was surprised, last Monday night, after closing time at the Mandarin Inn, with a birthday party from the magagement, outside friends, and other (summer - working) students. Somehow, she had been kept out of the kitchen, her orders handed to her, etc., those important few minutes when candles were being put on her birthday cake. The two cooks and Faye Wong had given her a gift earlier, and at the party, a beautiful nylon blouse was given her from the girls. A T-bone steak dinner was served and much food,ice-cream, and cake, eaten, amid birthday wishes, etc. Mary Lou did successfully blow out all the candles, so she is to get the wish made then. On the cake, was written, “Mary Lou”, and also “Mo-No”. Now, if any bf you Teeners are curious about the nickname, you’ll have to ask Mary Lou, for “Teen” reporter was told of another nickname, and, alas, getting them mixed, is scared to give out for fear of giving the wrong one. Fred Lawson, Lowell Galloway, and Art Kistler, Cromwell boys, who for some reason, seem to for dates, in the Mandarin Inn vicinity, are not so carefree as seems, for they are expecting their Draft Call, very soon. Gene Morgan, (who won the Indiana State Championship, in boat races) Bob Frye, and Charles Settles, have rented a cottage nearby, are guests, otherwise, of Dave Cook, Johnson Hotel, and Mary Lou Denzel. The boys, Howe High School students, are returning to Indianapolis soon, for another boat race. Sandra Worley, "flew through the air with the greatest of ease,” from Albuquerque, to the home of her father, Dr. J. P. Worley in Indianapolis, recently. Dr. and Mrs. Worley, brought her to Syracuse, last Saturday, to the home of her mother’s brother, Johnnie Fisher, Syracuse Lake. Sandra will have a visit now, awhile, and return to Indianapolis, until the latter part of August, when she will have more Syracuse Lake vacation. Pat Finton also “flew through the air,” probably via bicycle, to greet the object of “how many letters to Albuquerque, Pat?” Mary Lou Denzel and Sasha
