BOY SCOUTS IN BIG GAIN AT SUMMER CAMP Estimated reports from Pioneer Trails Council has revealed a 50% anticipated increase in enrollment over last year’s summer camp attendance. The camp near Cromwell. Ind., consists of 167 acres and is adjacent to three spring-fed lakes. A new- record of nineteen chartered troops planning to attend with own leadership and using the camp facilities and program has been reached. All camp sites have been reserved to capacity, with the exception of the provisional camp during the weeks starting July 3 and 10th. Good representation has been assured from Elkhart. Atwood. Goshen. Silver Lake. Syracuse. Middlebury. Nappanee. ‘Warsaw. Jamestown, Dunlap, LaGrange. New Paris. Milford. Wakarusa, and Millersburg. So far 241 Scouts have registered from these communities for camp. William Campbell, of Elkhart, an ex-Mariue and currently a student at Ball State Teachers’ College has been selected as waterfront director. He will attend the National Council Aquatic School near Joliet. 111., from June 12 to 18th. Gerald Kelver. local Social Security Administrator . for the three counties coinciding with the Council Area, has volunteered to spend a day at camp each week as rifle marksmanship instructor. He holds a National Rifle Association instructor s certificate and has been a leader in the Scouting Movement for many years. Art Parrish, district extension forester, has again volunteered to serve as camp naturalist. With the appointment of three additional junior staff members, the camp staff has,been completed. Morris Young, troop 11, First Presbyterian church in Elkhart, Rusell Poor, troop 30. First Methodist church in Warsaw; and Dave Thomas, troop 18. Central Christian church in Elkhart have all accepted staff assignments. r Many troops are making preparations for a parents’ night at camp on Wednesday evenings. A special feature for the parents will be a stunt campfire that evening. Emphasis will be placed on a rugged out-of-doors program requiring alertness, scoutcraft knowledge, physical fitness and initiative. Adequate rest and wholesome food : are provided. The camp is regulated by national health and safety standards. I Scouts may still enroll for camp through, their scoutmasters, although -they may no longer qualify for the 10% discount given those enrolling by June 1. NEW WARSAW SPEKOW&Y OPENS SATI RDAY NRHIT The new Warsaw speedway located on the Kosciusko fairgrounds will open the inaugural race of the summer season on Saturday, June 11th with time trials starting at 7 p m. and the race getting the ‘green flag’ .exactly at 8:30 p.tri. ' For the past^ two weeks, expert track builders have worked on the new oval. The bandstand has been dismantled and replaced with an official judges stand. - The new quarter mile track will be lighted with "5.000 watt electric lighting system that will turn the shores into a bright daylight racing oval. Because of its location on Winona Lake, the dust element will be absorbed. However 10 tons of calcium chloride and rock salt has been conditioned into the surface to make it dust proof. The United Automobile Racing Association of Chicago, will offer over forty racing ears and new driving stars that are new to Indiana fans. This group of speed demons have thrilled the Raceway Park and Gill Stadium patrons for the past several seasons. The largest purses In midget racing history will be offered and the largest number of cars ever entered on an Indiana track will be a feature of opening night 500 seats will be available and 500 reserved box seats will be placed on sale this week. The new speedway is bedecked with pennants and decorations and will add to the beauty of the opening presentation. A special phone has been installed in the speedway offices for out of town patrons who may call (Warsaw 173) to check on track and weather conditions, thus, avoiding a long drive in case of rain. A full summer season program has been scheduled for each Saturday night with midgets—hot rods—stock ears and motorcycle races.
