ELECTED PRESIDENT OF LITERARY ASSOCIATION Mrs. Irene Macy Strieby. formerly of Syracuse, librarian .of the Lilly Research Laboratories of Ell Lilly and Co., is the new president of the Special Libraries Association. Mrs. Strieby, who served last year as first vice-pres-ident. took office June 3 at the annual business meeting of the association in Chicago, where the 38th annual convention was in session last week. Nearly a thousand special librarians of business and industrial organizations, newspapers, hospitals, museums, research ins- < ad large public and university libraries have been attending meetings panned around the convention theme. New Frontiers Mrs. Sr • to ihe Lilly Research Laboratories in 1934 and has been active in library and professional societies locally and nationally. She has been ~a director of the Indiana Association for adult education. <19451947,) is a member of the American Library Assoeiatioh, the British Association of Special Libraries and Information Bureau, the Indiana Historical Association. From 1944 to 1946 she was a member of the library service committee of th- Committee for economic Development. A collector of old pitchers and buttons. Mrs. Strieby also makes a hobby of genealogical r» search She has written many articles for technical and library journals, and is a frequent speaker at professional meetings. Other new officers of the special library association whose elections ■* were announced are Miss Rose VormelkeT, head of Business Information Bureau of the Cleveland Public Library as first vice-president and presidentelect; Mrs. Ruth H Hooker, librarian of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, second vice-president; Mr. Adrian A. Paradis, assistant secretary of American Airlines. Inc treasurer; and Mr Donald T. Clark, as- i sistant librarian of the Harvard | Graduate School ot Business Ad-1 ministration director. Fred Buhrt. of Gary. Ind., spent two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Popenfoose and son, Lola Buhrt and Louise Buhrt. Rev. and Mrs. Travis Purdy, of. Muncie, were in Syracuse. Thursday.
GIVEN 2 TO 3-YEAR SUSPENDED SENTENCE Francis McDonald, 41, of Syracuse, received a suspended sentence of from 2 to 5 years at the state prison when he pleaded guilty to a petit larceny charge in circuit court Wedneftftay morning. He also was assesed a 51 fine and costs, totaling 519.45. The sentence was suspended upon request of Porter B. Williamson. prosecuting attorney. McDonald gave indications of returning to Michigan, where he had been making his home before moving to Syracuse for a short visit several weeks ago. McDonald was arrested by state police on June 14 at Ligonier. He was wanted for stealing several chickens from the home of his mother-in-law. Mrs. Anna Spencer, of Syracuse. She had signed and affidavit of grand larceny against McDonald on May 29, but the affidavit was amended to
