BY JOHN HARVEY FURBAY PH D ■ It is all wrong to suppose that clipping the hair off a dog will make him more comfortable in hot weacher. says dog expert James R Kinney, in his book, “How to Raise a Dog" (Simon & Shuster, New York). The dog may be cooler, but nature has already caused him to shed his excess hair and has planned that he should be protected by the remaining hair, as insects can make the dog miserable when without his hair. Then, too, the prickly cut ends of the hair may cause skin irritation to the dog. Natures own haircut is sufficient.

COAST GUARDSMAN DESCRIBES INVASION So you’re a 17-year-old young man and anxious to get into action? Hero’s a story written in a letter home by Coast Guardsman Kenny Magee. He describes his version of the liberation of the Philippines. Magee is a typical home-town fellow. He is only one of thousands who has gone off to war. n(e isn’t a hero. Magee doesn’t wear any medals. He’s just the kid down the block doing a job. This is what happened aboard his ship. “On Oct. 12, at 1630 (4:30p. m.), we were given orders to get underway. Soon the captain was heard on the P. A. system. He announced ;hat we were in on the invasion of’the Philippines. He told us the Importance of this mission anc. that if we failed it meant that the big invasion of D-Day would be held up. The objective was two small islands that were the entrance to Leyte Gulf. * These waters are the most dangerously mined of the Pacific). This “suicide fleet” was to land rangers on Dinigat and Homohon islands. The big force would invade three days later. Their small fleet ran Into heavy rain squalls which soon burst into a 4-day cyphoon. The overcast skies protected them from enemy aircraft. Just as they came within range of their objective, the typhoon brotte. This was the day—and hour.? Kenny’s ship, Gallup, fired the first blow on the Philippines. After hours of firing the rangers were put ashore. When Dinigat island had been taken there was another job to be done. They were to follow the mine sweeps and sink or explode the mines which were cut loose. Oct. 26th, the Jap navy forces moved in and a tremendous sea battle began. Magee wrote that “many pages in naval history were written on that afternoon.” His Coast Guard manned ship was out there longer than any other. The crew was hoping that the day would soon come “when we can return to our port some 1,000 miles south.” The Coast Guard needs more young men like Kenny Magee. They need you out there for more invasions. If you are a young man of 17 with at least one year of high school and are in good physical conditioo, we urge you to etlist oow! Apply at the U. S. Coast Guard Recruiting Station, Room 215, 53 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago. Applicants must present birth certificates. INFORMATION ABOUT FEDERAL INCOME TAX Will H. Smith, Collector of Internal Revenue, today said: “To correct any possible misunderstanding in regard to the income of a wife, the wife’s income must be taken into consideration in» determining the tax liability of married persons, whether filed separately or jointly. “When a husband has gross income in excess of SSOO there is a liability to file a Federal income tax return. He is entitled to claim one surtax exemption of SSOO for himself, and in the event the wife has no income, he may list her name under the exemption schedule and claim a SSOO surtax exemption for her. In the event that the wife has any taxable’ income whatsoever, in order to claim her surtax exemption it is necessary that they file a joint return and rnclude the income of husband anc wife. In this respect it would nearer be permissible for the husbanc to list his wife’s name in the exemption schedule, claim her surtax exemption, and exclude her income from the return. Os course, husband and wife are always privileged to file separate income tax returns based on their respective incomes. Under these circumstances it is necessary that each claim his or her own surtax exemption. Thus it is apparent that if one spouse has gross income of less than SSOO it is to their benefit to file jointly.” v If the tarpayers entire income ■is from wa.es less than $5,000, the return aay be filed on simplified form W-2. Tax will oe computed by Internal Revernue department and the taxpayer notified of any additional tax or refund due. K additional tax is due a bill giving the taxpayer thirty days within which to pay same will be sent. The final date for filing 1944 returns is March 15. The 1945 edition of the Syracuse and Wawasee Lake Guide and Business Directory will contain photographs of all the hotels on the - ike, various pictures of local bull; .Ings, new maps, and other lake cenes. If you know of any con < ctions, or additions, to last yea. book, please write a card to T a Journal.
