EVANGELIOAL-U. B. MERGER NEARS (Continued from page 1.) Virginia. His traveling companion on these long circuits preached in the German language to German communities as they came to them. One of Bishop Asbury s choice friends was William Phillip Otterbein, a German Reformed preacher in Balitmore, who formed religious societies somewhat after the manner of the Methodist order. It is suggested that these societies, along with some others sponsored by some other ministers were offered to the Methodist. Bishop Asbury seemed not in favor of receiving German groups into the Methodist church. He Believed the German language would soon cease to be used in the United States, and thought it expedient to favor its continuance by ecclesiastical sanction. Rev. W. P. Otterbein was therefore encouraged to form his societies into a separate church. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ had its founding in 1800. The Evangelical church was organized in 1807. Jacob Albright was the leading figure in its inception and formation. If the union is finally consumated, the two local congregations will become one. However, it would be a fine thing if the division in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, as now represented by the conservatives and liberals, could be rectified and a three point amalgamation could take place.—Rev. J. C. Bailey. RUSH SOIL TREATMENT FOR BEETLE CONTROL Treatment of areas in which Japanese beetles were trapped during the summer months has progressed rapidly under favorable weather conditions. Virgil M. Simmons, commissioner of the Department of Conservation, said today. Work has been completed in Fort Wayne where 20 acres were treated, in Whiting where 17 acres were in the treatment zone, and on 38 acres in Logansport. A total of 99 acres is to be treated in Indianapolis with work completed on more than a third of this area. Completion of the treatment in Indianapolis will depend upon weather conditions.
