SYRACUSE "HI" TIMES
First Grade September 12—41 children enrolled; 22 boys and 19 girls. We are very interested in our new series of readers. We are very busy preparing ourselves for our new readers this year. We are making our own preprimer, called “Tom's Trip.” which introduces us to “Home Life in the City and in the Country.” Also we are making a color book in our reading circle. Chairs are wearing bows of all our different colors. Tne nurse,’ Miss Sohaski, has spent one day with us and next month all eyes will be tested. We appericate the beautiful bouquets of flowers sent bj’ our mothers; they help to make our room so attractive. Second Grade. There are 19 girls and 14 boys in the second grade this year. The children have chosen officers of the Good Citizens’ Club as follows: Barbara Bowser, president; Lowell Barnhart, vice-pres.; Cynthia Frevert, sec’y.; and Ralph Bushong, assis’t. sec’y. We have been reading stories in supplementary readers as preparation for our new readers. “Round About You.” Our activity unit for September is, transportation, past and present, so we’re working on a book of transportation posters in handwork class. Ways of transportation are shown on the sand table by top airplanes, trains, autos, trucks, a stage coach and a covered wagon. Ruth Houser, Nadena Coy and Rosetta Holderman have been absent. \ -■ Jack and Robert Dean and Esther Wilkinson brought goldfish for our aquarium. we are going to make a pet booklet. Last year sometime, Johnny Kinderer was given an alligator for a present. Well, since school has started, the alligator has come up missing. Johnny doesn’t have any idea where he is. Monday there was quite a commotion in the room just after recess. The center of attraction was below the front windows. Lloyd Bitzer and Stanley Barnhart were trying to tell Johnny just sure that the alligator was under a big bush. But I guess Lloyd and Stanley couldn’t keep a straight face—-and Johnny discovered it was all a joke. All he said was, “Just wait until recess—l’ll get you!” Fourth Grade. There are thirty-seven enrolled in the fourth grade. Robert Devault from Eppings, North Dakota, entered the fourth grade Monday, September 12. Joan Harvey and Dean Ruple have been absent from the fourth grade. Fifth Grade. Marshall Coy has found the wires on top of our fence are sharp. At least he isn’t planning to try hanging on with one arm again. Now that everyone has their multiplication tables learned again and know their combinations. we are ready to do some real fifth grade work in the new Champion arithmetic books. Sixth Grade. School has begun with an enrollment of thirty-four. This is the smallest sixth grade class to be enrolled here for several years. We have two new pupils this year; Jane Myers and Lowell Poyser. Every pupil has a full set of books. This is quite unusual, for last year one scholar never did get all his books. Work is advancing very nicely so far and a good attitude is displayed by most every pupil. The health nurse visited us last week and gave a quick inspection to the pupils. If all of us will cooperate with her, many causes of

absence will be eradicated and attendance will be better. Opportunity Room. We have planned an activity program in arithmetic for Tuesday and Thursday of each t week. The old sand table serves as our store, which the children named, “Jot ’Em Down Store.” The date, kales, amount of sales, and amount of change given to each customer, with the name of the customer, are written on real sales pads. The boys and girls wish to thank Mr. Koher, the members of the advisory board and Mr. Slabaugh for their radio. There are some children who enjoy a musical program each recess and those from the country have been having a radio program while they eat their lunch. Soft Ball.
