FIRST ARMY PLANE It is just 30 years since General James Allen, then chief of the signal service, formally approved the purchase for the United States Army of its first airplane, built by the Wright brothers in their small shop in Dayton, Ohio. The modest specifications for this plane are interesting for purposes in comparison with the giant'war planes of the present. The contract called for a heavier than air machine, capable of carrying two passengers*with su’ficient fuel for a flight of 125 miles and able to remain aloft an hour with this load. It was also required that it should have a speed of not less than 40 miles an hour. In its tests at Fort Myer, Va., the plane actually attained a speed of 42 miles an hour and it remained in the air 1 hour and 12 minutes, then a world record. The final acceptance test was made over a five mile course along the Potomac, marked by captive balloons, on July 30, 1909. It was accepted by the army on August 2. This pioneer plane, now in the museum of the Smithsonian In-, stitution, appears crude indeed in comparison with the new fighting machines with speeds of more than 400 miles per hour. The 30th anniversary of the first military plane was observed with appropriate ceremonies and aerial exhibitions by the army air force, centering at Wright Field in Dayton, but including exhibitions at various military air base?. THE COTTON [PROBLEM It is not as widely recognized as it should be that the plight of the cotton farmer is not a problem for the South alone. Jt affects the people of every section of the country in some degree, and it Is to the interest of all to cooperate in its solution. One practical way in which the whole nation may give this cooperation is by using more cotton goods—especially wearing apparel. This could be done at an actual saving, and with little, if any, sacrifice in style or comfort, for in recent years, the development of new and beautiful cotton fabrics has been amazing. The low price of cotton has reduced the amount of goods and products the Soutfi. can buy from the North and East. It is forcing the cotton farmer to turn more and more to the raising of crops which compete with those of other sections, especially the great agricultural Middle West. This applies to both field crops and livestock. Therefore, in their own interest, the people of other regions should aid the program of the’ National Cotton Council, which is designed to increase the consumption of cotton products, through scientific research, and to expand foreign markets for American cotton. Mrs. Lillian George of Bristol, Eng., sued Henry Thorne for wages due her, alleging he claimed to have paid her by giving spiritualist seances for her benefit. lElizabeth Rice, 12, of Worchester, Mass., is the 1939 national spelling champion among School children, and received SSOO as the grand prize. |H & H Laundry | Phone 80 Syracuse, Indiana

DRIVE AT NIGHT? TRY VITAMIN “A” We have heard a lot of reasons why we should get the proper vitamins, but here is a new one. Saftey engineers of the Employers Mutual Liability Insurance Company say that you should get Vitamin A because science has proven that it has a great effect on driving ability, especially at night. This is the vitamin which makes it possible for a person to see and not be temporarily blinded by the lights of other cars. It helps the eye adjust itself to changes the intensity of light. About 60 per cent of all fatal traffic accidents occur at night. Based on mileage, the motor vehicle death rate is three times as high at night as during the day. Improvements are being made to better night highway visability and toward reducing the blinding glare of headlights. In Michigan, the Employers Mutuals bulletin says, a 79 per cent reduction of night traffic accidents took place when reflectors were installed on a certain highway. .

ABOUT SALESMANSHIP In a radio talk some time ago, W. J. Cameron made some rather surprising statements concerning salesmen and salesmanship, among which was the assertion that about 70 per cent of all sales are made on the initiative of the buyers themselves, and only about 30 per cent through personal selling efforts. He also said that 70 per cent of all goods sold personally through the initiative of salesmen are sold by only 20 per cent of the salesmen. These figures apply, we assume, to salesmen who personally call on prospective customers, rather than to clerks in stores «or otner regular places of business, whose results could hardly be checked or estimated. When Lewis Cornwall of Stockton, Mo., was operated upon, physicians found two bird shot in his appendix.
