BEATING THE BREADLINE Even in these days when we’re used td astronomic figures, $532000,000 is a lot of money. That is the amount of new, ordinary life insurance sold in the single month of. May. It means that several thousand Americans have purchased half a billion dollars additional protection, t 0 be paid them in the future when they need it most. It means that children will be educated —dependents left economically secure —old age made happy and independent for workers. It means earned “social security”—bought by a foresighted and individualistic people who are determined not to become wards of government. EASY FINES FOR FRAUD Fraudulent collection of unemployment benefits b y persons while really employed has become widespread, according to an official release by Judge John D. Petree, director of industrial relations in Alabama. In recent months no ’ess than 145 convictions for such frauds were obtained in a single county, and 22 additional cases are still pending. From this some idea may be gained concerning the wholesale abuse of unemployment compensation laws throughout the country. That these abuses are likely to increase may be surmised because of the very light fines imposed on those convicted, and the easy jail sentences given those unable to pay the fines or repay the

unemployment fund. In the case of one N. T. Humphrey’s of Huntsville, Ala., who pleaded guilty to three different instances of defrauding the fund, a tine of only S2O was imposed for each offense. Here is a man who systematically took money from a fund intended for worthy employed persons, being let off with almost nominal fines after his third offense. Such leniency will doubtless encourage many others to take a chance on robbing the= pnemplaymant fund through false claims to benefits. A grouP of small boy s in StJohnsbury, Va., who found on automobile loaded with liquor, succeeded in peddling 45 pints before the attention of police was oilled.
EXPECTATION OF LIFE How the average span of human life has been increased during the last three centuries is the subject of an interesting little table in Uncle Sam’s Almanac for 1939. In the year 1600, it is stated that the expectation of life for a child at birth was only 20 years and now it is over 60 This almost incredible Increase is naturally due to the advances of medical and surgical science, and to the many safeguards to health resulting from better sanitation. These have been most effective in reducing deaths during infancy which in former times were appaling. In other words, more people live to old age, nowadays, bit the extreme limits of age, have been extended comparatively little.
